I got a good deal on a AW 17 with a 770m 3GB, however I currently have an m17x with 7970 2GB that I bought six months ago.
I have a buyer setup to buy the m17x for almost near what I paid for it and for a small increase I can get the new 17 with 770m.
Can anyone comment on the performance increase from a 7970 to this 770m or should I go all out and get the 780m?

Look at the information that I just posted in the M17x benchmark thread and you will see good information for comparison. It looks to me like that 770M and 7970M are very similar. I would go green and get the new machine if I were you. Those benchmark scores are with little effort on a new GPU with some headroom, so that is also something to keep in mind comparing to old tech. If you can swing it financially, get 780M and 4930MX. It will be a lot more powerful.

The 770m is a current student deal where you get a free Vindicator backpack and some money off, it actually is listed in Canada for $1999.
For $500 more you can get the 780m and a bump from the i7-4700MQ to the 4800 but no backpack and student deal.
I tried calling and chatting, and nobody in Dell can add the 780m onto the student promo... they force you to get the higher spec'd machine regardless at what some people on here have said about calling to customize -

Thanks Fox! lol your Benchmark post is pretty much exactly what I was looking for. I am really happy with the 7970 gameplay on the m17x so I think I will pull the trigger with the 770m on the 17 and go a bit greener with haswell and a few other small improvements.
Unless anyone can convince me how much more the 780m is. -
Oh, 780M is a massive performance leap over 770M. But, it needs to be tweaked to be awesome same as most all other GPUs.

I agree with Mr. Fox, the 7970 and the 770m are pretty close in performance but I would definitely go with nVidia. Also the 780m is a great GPU and you will certainly feel the difference between that one and the 770m.
