Wow! Like you it has always been assumed no AW laptops work in 3D with a card not sold with the configuration. Like you say, some sort of internal certification fails.

The way this is worded, it can be done but if it does work than I am astounded! Nice fix if they are messing with the card ID but will it have other problems? You shouldn't even need a modified driver if everything reports it's a 580m but they appear to use a modified driver (laptopvideo2go).

They are very specific. I thought that in the R3 you would need a modified bios to access the settings that turn off the iGPU? But that is only for the 60hz model anyway. The 120hz already has the iGPU disabled so what are they talking about in their bios instructions?

Very confused, but if you have the cash they are very clear on stating 3D on the R3 works so they should stand behind that and help if you run into issues - or just return it. I wondered if they are just thinking about the 120hz monitor working but if that was the case they would say the same for the R4 .

Personally I hope you go for it, and I would if the disposable money is available ;)

If you proceed, proceed with caution. Svl7, a high respected BIOS modder, tryed his hand at this a while back and was unable to get it to work. We had searched for instances of the 580m and replaced them with 680m/780m IDs, it never worked...so I have a nasty feeling these guys may have faked the device ID on the card itself, maybe tricking it to look like a 580M to the m17x R3 so it will enable 3D. I really don't know though, very sketchy business here.

This is true, we've seen failure after failure. But, if they claim it works at least you can have the money back if it does not.

Well that might be true if I lived in the states but I doubt they would pay the customs and VAT associated with me getting it in the UK.
So looks like I may have to just put a std 780m in my machine and forget about the 3D, at least 780m now has its sound issues fixed.

I have asked the seller a direct question about compatibility and as yet not received a reply, TBH I doubt i'll get one, this is starting to scream scam to me.

I doubt they ever truly got it to work. like it was said above some very smart people tried their hand at tackling the problem and couldn't figure out a way to make it work. 99% sure its a scam.

I also believe the 3d screen was an lg panel. I know the regular 1080p panels were both aug and lg, but I can't recall seeing anything other than an lg panel in conjunction with 3d . :)
