Dead 780m![]()
So I was playing mechwarrior online and my laptop just up and shut down.... adaptor light went out and dead. If I reconnect the adaptor to the wall the light comes on but as soon as I plug it into the laptop the light dies. Off the bat I knew this was def not good but I had no warning signs anything was wrong. My first thought was MB failure but I don't smell anything at all, not that I guess I would in every scenario. I pulled the 780m out and tried to plug the adaptor in again and low and behold the adaptor plugs in and stays on now...so I guess I am looking at a failed 780m ? Don't see to many of those but it is just my luck.....
I can't really test the iGPU at the moment as I did the 120hz screen upgrade so I will need to put the 60hz screen and cable back in before I can even test that.
Any other ideas? I am open to suggestions.
FYI I don't see any visible damage or anything to the card...no obvious blown caps or anything.

Check on the Core, My 860M died the same way and after powering it on, Nvidia Driver vanished, 60Hz so It booted off the Intel iGPU. Upon removing the card I found a lil chip on the corner of the core.
Not much on my mind to suggest, Since everything is routed from the dGPU once we have the 120Hz set in.
Sorry for the issue mate, Hope you sort it out. -
I ran home and got the 60hz screen and popped it back in with the old cable and it is up and running again minus the 780m which is sitting on the desk beside it so I am going to hope and pray that the MB is fine and it was just the 780m crapping out
which is still odd that it would show zero warning signs and then just kapoof......
Guess I will look into the 980mnot that I can really afford to do so ATM but I use this thing for 10.5 hours every day at work so....

I have a 980M that's heavily modded to increase overclock efficiency. If you want it, PM me and we'll work something out (I'll send you pics of the voltmod)
Also, the 5-pipe heatsink on ebay looks like a pretty nice investment to go along with this card.MogRules likes this. -
Out of curiosity has anyone ever had or heard of a bad MXM slot? It would be supremely unfortunate to get a new card and have it be the slot.....

hmm
without another machine to boot it off, I don't think there's much troubleshooting you can do -

College wasn't too keen on letting me use his 780m
not that I blame him all that much. I did try and bake it when I came home but didn't make any difference so I am calling it FUBAR at this point and moving on. A 980m is still cheaper then a new system and honestly CPU improvements have not come far enough for me to even consider a new laptop as the performance won't be THAT much better aside from the new 1000 series cards but then I am looking at 2k instead of $900 so I will just repair this one and toss a 980m in it and call it a day.
On the bright side...with a new battery I JUST put in it, the Intel GPU functioning again and no dedicated card, my battery life is fantastic! lol...../cryAshtrix likes this. -
Sorry to hear about your GPU going...On a side note regarding a system like ours I'm wanting to buy one of the new ones once the GTX 1080 is released in November and wondering what mine would sell for on ebay as I see some of lesser quality being sold for more than $1000
My specs are in mint condition other than the touchpad has a minor wear into it where part of the top layer shows wearing off but works like it should...And one thing else it's still under warranty until December and can be extended one more year...My maid cleans it twice a week weather it needs it or not when she is here...

they might be able to give you an idea there. The new ones are nice, especially with a 1080 option but I am less then enthusiastic about the not being able to change stuff aspect....at least with my current machine I can swap out the GPU and be up and running again....not an option with the new 17's, you would have a paperweight unless the iGPU managed to take over, which in my case it can't as the machine won't even turn on with the GPU inserted.
I should point out there is a chance according to another thread that the 1070 MIGHT work in our systems. No one has tested it yet , and it would require modification but there is a thread disusing the possibilities. That being said the cost to buy the card would be through the roof...it would almost be cheaper to just buy a new laptop.
780m died :(
