Sorry, the original post was bugged (there seems to be a bug in the forums right now)

BUt from the title of your thread...no, it is not possible to get the 120hz screen with a 7970m. You can only get the 120hz screen if you have an nvidia card

EDIT: Holy, it looks like i created this thread lol...I did not

What if You have a 120hz screen ad want to switch to the 7970? I'm guessing it should work but I don't want to go for it unless it does.

Is there actually a compatability issue? like, for instance say you bought a m17x r3 with GTX 460 and 120hz screen and swapped the card out for a 7970 would you have issues?

It will simply not work. You can't upgrade to an AMD card if you have the 120hz screen. You have to stick with nvidia only. Widezu has the technical explanation.

The 7970m will only work with the 60hz screen

I'm trying to understand this thread but I'm confused.

Let's say I have the 17x R4, and I want to hook it up to my HDTV with an HDMI. My HDTV has 120hz refresh rate, are you saying it won't show up?

Edit: NVM I figured out what the thread is saying. Brain hurts now.

This is a different scenerio. I was referring to the 120hz LCD used for nvidia 3d vision that is attached to the laptop.

The 7970m will be able to render a picture to a 120hz TV via HDMI. I just did it yesterday and it works fine

Yeah this whole forum bug got me confused for a second. I was assuming that 7970m doesn't render on 120hz screens at all but then I realized you were just referring to the 3D screen.

This forums is doing some funny stuff, but more or less I am asking is it at all possible to get dell to ship a 7970M with 120hz screen. I do not care about the 3D at all. I want the increased refresh rate alone. Right now I just dont have any options that put a 7970M with a 120hz screen. I would prefer glossy and am waiting on the samsung series 7 gamer. I can configure it on the dell site but then it say it is incompatible. One basic sales rep said no, but I never trust them.

Also I would not mind a link to the explaination about why it would not work.

There is no particular link which explains this only individual testing. I have done this myself along with many other users here and concluded that AMD cards cannot drive the 120Hz screen on the M17x R3/R4 mobo due to the circuitry.

It is a paradox because the AMD card must to fed through the Intel HD Graphics regardless of whether it is on or not. The way it is wired, it goes to the LVDS port only. The 120Hz screen uses the eDP port which from the way that the mobo is wired, can only be driven by an nvidia card as when it is configured. The reason is that the Intel Integrated Graphics cannot push signal through a eDP port and the AMD card cannot be utilised without the Intel GPU an therefore is limited to 60Hz.

Ah well dissapointing but what can you do, guess I have to wait for the samsung. Not that I could afford an alienware anyway.
