To those that are upgrading to Windows 8, does your brightness control work with AMD cards? I've been trying various drivers but I have no luck. The brightness is stuck on full blast and there is no way to change it. Yes, I have OSD and all Alienware support programs installed.

I have found some other threads with this issue mentioned (example: here), but I was still seeing what our brilliant community has to say about it.

    Cheers

Might be a silly suggestion but have you tried changing brightness through Windows power management settings?

Hi kimlo, that doesnt work either. It is locked on full brightness be it from Alienware buttons, or windows power settings. When I try to dim the backlight, Windows 8 will say it is getting dimmer, when it is not, and Alienware says always that it is full blast bright. Dunno what to think.

I think the problem came from your display driver version, not from the OS. Since I update the driver above 11.10, My brightness control not working anymore.....

What driver that you're using now ?

same problem but with m17xr3, 6990m, 12.11beta4 with windows 7. no brightness control. It's just driver related, do they even test them on alienware/sager systems before releasing? Getting sick of these constant driver problems. just give me working uninstall and install buttons.

    No they dont Mkk :D

All the makers have the same problem: Sager, HP, Lenovo, Dell. None tested, or AMD is screwing up, or Win8 didnt work with them or whatever excuse.

Apparently it is a driver issue. Have you tried any other driver version?

I can confirm its the driver issue. 12.10 and 12.11 betas are having this issue. Apparently your brightness control will work when you shift to intel display, but on performance, they will not.

Does the setting stay the same if you switch to Intel, change brightness switch back to performance? because right now I'm stuck on lowest brightness.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but are people still having brightness control issues in Windows 8? No driver ever worked for me.

I think it's a Windows 8 issue, because since upgrading I am able to change brightness, but the Alienware OSD brightness slider doesn't appear in the centre of the screen. Sometimes, the built-in Windows 8 brightness slider appears in the top-left of the screen, but not always. It happened with my 6970M, and it still happens after a fresh install of Windows with my new GTX680M too.

Yeah, I knew it was a Windows 8 problem only. I wish I knew "what the heck" the Windows 8 team did to this OS. Because it is due to Metro that this problem exists. If you use the Windows 2012 version of the OS, the brightness controls still work as long as Metro and Desktop Experience is not enabled.

Oh well. Then I either use Server 2012 and try to hack in my games, or back to Windows 7.

Fingers crossed Microsoft fix it in the Windows 8.1 update! I doubt it, though.
