Since my 880m died I've ordered a 980m, but in the meantime I've replanted a 7970m from my M17x R4 in the Ranger.

The gpu itself works fine, but there's a problem with the GPU fan - it does not spin up.

The fan is fine, I ran the power+fn diagnostics and it spins up, no problem there.

MSI afterburner doesn't see the fan at all, neither does radeon software.

    Even HWinfo doesn't control it.

Could it be the bios? I'm on A14 stock, and rather wouldn't update the bios because of the microcode-nerf.

Is there some other way to contol the fan manually.

I did this recently and will post soon since this thread is closed

Pwm bypass switch on 17 r1

you can cut the pwm wire but then the fan is at100% all the time

Ah sweet, I have a spare M17x gpu fan, might cut that one, don't wanna destroy the Ranger's fan for when the 980m arrives.

It's not a perfect solution but I guess it's better than nothing.

    R4 THPDJ fan?
that one is 11 cfm, much better, I put that one in mine.
    stock ranger is 1.something

you dont have to cut the wire, just carefully unplug it from connector

Oh okay, wasnt aware of that. I'll check which one is it when i come home from work.

I thought the one from M14x was the one to get.

Just a quick heads-up SpeedFan works fine when you enable DELL support and adjust custom fan curves. Solved the problem for me (although not perfect, it's better than nothing).

Still the system by itself won't spin the fan. Interesting.

HWinfo64 and Afterburner also didn't work.

Yes as the 7970M doesn't have fan support
