Am about to receive my M17x R4 in sig after waiting almost a month :D I've read that the 7970m has some issue with switching graphics to the HD4000 for battery saving.
My question is if this has been fixed with a newer driver or bios? also what would be the most current stable catalyst drivers.

12.8 works great for me, also the HD4000 works fine, i just choose not to use it since i have my notebook always plugged in.

Fix is coming but for M17xR4 you can disable Enduro so it is not an issue.

Not fixed, but not an issue for the R4 as mentioned.

you are correct, but you can always lower the clocks of the card whilst not gaming to get those extra few minutes :p

well if disabling Enduro is the only workaround well thats not really a "fix" :p I do need battery life for extended use at university.
I will give dell support heck about it if does give me issues, since the system is a replacement for my M15x I will push to get it replaced by a GTX 680m if thats the only option to get proper switching gfx and battery life.

Well, it is just a matter of restarting your system to turn Enduro on and off. Unless you need to go from high performance gaming to battery saving performance during class, it really shouldn't be a problem. If you can't wait for the update and restarting the system is to much of a hassle, mind as well turn around and send it back for the GTX.

"I do need battery life for extended use at university." For me this isn't a problem as you can use the fnF7 to switch enduro on and off, requiring a reset yes. It does have better battery life with enduro enabled, but seems to be better for gaming with it off and much less of a hassle. I suspect that it will be fine, but I don't know if you have another agenda "I will push to get it replaced by a GTX 680m ".

From what I hear the optimus is much better. It works fine on the m11x that I have. 680 is a much more expensive card obviously. That being said a 21 second restart isn't a big deal to me - hope you have an ssd!

my only agenda is to have a fully functional system, been through hell and back with dell support and if it isn't working right the first time I would hope they get it right the second time.

I will be getting a ssd eventually, just not sure when drive configuration to do. Most likely be 2x750GB in a raid 0 with a msata drive for disk caching and an ssd in place of the optical ( not sure if opti bay supports sata 3 speeds )

The Enduro issue is not a Dell problem. Don't blame them.

The fix is supposed to be out this month.
