    Hello,

I have a 2nd hand M17XR4 from 2014. (I bought it 2nd hand because I wanted an alienware but had no money for brand new ones, its my first ever personal purchase after saving up when i had a job, my first and only laptop :( )

The issue happened suddenly while playing League, it crashed and wouldnt boot up anymore.

It gives 8 beeps when powering on.

No LCD light and 8 beeps when powered on with gpu.

LCD lights up when gpu is removed but still 8 beeps and stuck at black screen.

I cant bring it to a service center because there is none here in Philippines.

The LCD is 3d capable as I recall.

Im hoping to buy an old gpu from you guys just so I can make it work again.

The old gpu on it is a GTX 675M (see attached).

I brought it to some guys who tried to have a look but they couldnt find any visible issue on the motherboard, lcd, and gpu. (They opened the laptop up.)

They also tried to reheat the solders just in case but it did nothing.

I already spent 200$ in travel and expenses going to those shops because I live far from the capital but still no luck.

Can you guys help me out what should be done?

Willing to buy your old gpus or go to you to bave it fixed.

The 3d Model won't Post/Boot when no discrete GPU is inside, thus removing the GPU and trying to boot gives you nearly the same error (8 beeps).
Only thing you need is a GPU, as far as I can say from here.
I would have sm., most of them plug and play for the r4 (660m, 675m, 780m), but am from Germany, think that's too far away and maybe too expensive for you.

PS: there's no shame in buying and using such "old guys" ;) I personally find em much better than the brand new models from AW.

If you want to stick to the status quo and get it back up and running as cheap as possible, you can buy a brand new dell certified Nvidia Geforce GTX 765m for ~$105USD:

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Dell-A...sacat=0&_nkw=dell+nvidia+765m&_from=R40&rt=nc

You can go with a brand new dell certified Nvidia Geforce GTX 770m for $145 USD new (I'd recommend this to get up and running ASAP and a nice mild bump in performance):

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Dell-A...350699?hash=item5b43e8bf2b:g:6d8AAOSwwBha31jx

    They ship to the Philippines.

Yeah these will bump performance wise, but the 7xxm and above are not plug and play and need sm tweaking around with the drivers.

Thank you for the response, unfortunately I couldnt see 765 and 770m under the list here that shows successfull upgrades on m17xr4..I might opt to buying exact same gpu instead.

The 7xxm and 8xxm series would work, but need modding the drivers.
9xxm and above need special "treatment" + modding drivers (and a bit of modding the Heatsink itself).

However, as you have the 3d screen, only nVidia cards will work in your machine, none from AMD.

My mistake. I misread 675m as 765m. Mild dyslexia strikes again (and again and again and again).

There are some inexpensive used 675m”s on eBay for 135.00 USD:

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/DELL-ALIEN...sacat=0&_nkw=dell+nvidia+675m&_from=R40&rt=nc

Or if you prefer new for 210.00 USD:

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/DELL-ALIEN...sacat=0&_nkw=dell+nvidia+675m&_from=R40&rt=nc

Thank you for the help you guys.

I got a reply from dell customer service that they have a partner in the capital where I can bring th elaptop and they can have a look, with initial charge of 10$.

I might try travelling back to the capital and have them look at it first because thw GPUs from ebay have no return option, Im afraid to waste money if the issue is not GPU.

Will let you know, planning on going maybe by September (need to save up for the trip and expenses.)

The variables you are working with are the following:

    Bad Motherboard
    Bad eDP cable
    Bad GPU
    Bad panel

panel is least likely to be faulty, and its not often but sometimes the cable goes bad.

The most likely issue is the GPU and past that could be motherboard.

Best of luck on your repair

Try plugging an external monitor w/o gpu if it works. I remember that you tried plugging hdmi with gpu attached. As i remember also, 6 beeps is GPU failure. 8 beeps is lcd problem. Maybe you try attaching a different lcd screen if it works.
