My 8 in 1 Media Card reader is not showing up, no cards will read. tried an SD card and a Micro SD with adapter and nothing. Do i have to enable it in BIOS at all, I tried updating the drivers so far. It worked when I got the computer a few months ago. Any help would be appreciated.

    P.S.
Can move this to the right place, I was not sure where to type it, sorry in advance.

Yeah, make sure you have everything enabled in bios. Had that happen to me once when I disabled a device in bios that was totally unrelated don't remember what it was though.

The firewire option in the Bios is the device that controls the media card reader. I have no idea what the two have in common but if you read the description on the right side of the bios screen it tells you that it controls both firewire and media card slot. Turn firewire on and it should work again.

Tried disabling it and re-enabling it in Bios, still nothing. What would the driver be under in device manager so I can check if its there or not and if the driver is working proper.

It would be listed under "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers". There should be 3 devices listed,

    IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers
---Ricoh PCIe Memory Stick Host Controller
    ---Ricoh PCIe SD/MMC Host Controller
    ---Ricoh PCIe xD-Picture Card Controller

Ah i see chiefs. You might want to check if the SD card reader was connected back up. He might have forgot to reconnect it or something.

If you don't want to open it yourself give dell a ring and get a tech out to check it for you.

    Cheers. :)

ok, can we please BUMP this thread up really hard ?

I am also do have that very same problem. It's very weird as its only related to SD port and not the entire board (USB ports on the right side are fully functional).

Now, here is the wicked part. I called up Dell's tech support with this issue. Had a replacement done. Boom!! The issue is still there !! The system just won't recognize none of the SDcards I've tried.

Any ideas guys what that might be ?

Just wanted to drop that I've been trying to get the very same problem fixed for months.
    I had
    a) a tech replace the board with the card reader and usb ports
    b) a tech replace the entire motherboard
    c) the laptop send into a repair center where it was supposedly fixed
    d) formatted the machine and installed the drivers as recommended in this thread

And well, you can guess, no luck.
Additionally I had a struggle with the dell support. Technicians not arriving, support forgetting my tech requests, support not calling back as promised and more. It has really been a pain going on for 3 months now.
I hope to get a replacement system now. Tomorrow I should get a call about it.
Well, let's see, I don't trust the service anymore.

Peculiar, that there are more people having the same problem.
I thought it was isolated just for me...

Probably a stupid question-did you try a bios reset to defaults and a power drain?

Whoops totally forgot to post, I called a Dell tech guy he was sent out to check what was wrong with the Reader, he some how damaged the board and tells me the card reader is in there but you will have to wait the weekend to get a new motherboard, lol ok, he comes back replaces the board he fried and tells me I will have to reinstall the OS it says it is missing, I tell him why don't you go into the Bios and set the HDD to RAID 0, he dismisses what i say trying other things ( I am just laughing to myself in my head at this point), I hurry him out the door thanking him for his time even though he kinda did more harm then good. I boot up Bios set to RAID 0 and boom operating system boots up lol guess I knew a little more then the tech guy? or maybe they don't see many M17xR2 out this way oh well I will give him credit for fixing the card reader, he told me the wire connecting it was frayed or something (prob what shorted out the board when he replaced it and used the same frayed wire to boot it up lol. Everything was replaced and works fine, only had to wait like 3-4 days, not bad and I did not lose any of my 720p movies I had downloaded on there and all my game data yay!

    Hi,
I just want to let you know that the issue was finally resolved for me.
It took me four months of endless conversations with the dell support and a laptop which was nearly entirely rebuild with a new motherboard and several card readers.
Dell was unable to fix the card reader(at one point they even asked me to send them a photo of the laptop while having a card inserted... ) and finally send me a replacement laptop.
The new laptop works as it should and I'm happy again. I'm just disappointed that it took Dell that long to send me a replacement.
