Does a 90-91c max cpu temp when gaming or prime95? sounds right? Running the m14 or was it 15x high CFM fan and liquid ultra. i even sealed the gaps between the fins and fan. I can say after liquid pro gaming temps dropped quite a bit and it takes more load and time to get to 90c.
when does it start throttling? will ocing be much much harder with stock non unlocked UEFI?

don_svetlio In the Pipe, Five by Five.
Under P95 - sure
Under gaming - that's still toasty for ~50% load. -
No way in hell is that normal. with liquid ultra, I get max 84-85C with prime 95 at 4.2 ghz/4.4 ghz
-
looks like with gaming it's around 82c
i'd ask what all cooling mods you have but, i think the M18x might different there unless it and the m17x have the exact same heatsink? -
I don't have any mods, I have a stock M18x R2 (triple pipe extreme heatsink from the factory, factory 11.4CFM fan)
-
ah! different animals, 2 heat pipes and i had to take a 10 cfm m15x cpu fan and cut the tabs off to make it fit then sealed it up to the heat sink with aluminum tape.

My 3720QM runs hot as well. I ended up taking the multi on one core to 40 and the others are around 32 (I think). Then I lowered the watts. Runs games now without the fan roaring. I have the M14x fan mod as well. Fins are clean. New paste, but it is MX-4. I will have to get the liquid ultra soon.
@cdoublejj I dug a little deeper over the weekend. I discovered that the thermal pads that cover the VRMs (or chokes, not sure) were way too thick. This was causing the heatsink to not fully seat as the pads were severely compressed. I replaced those pads with 0.5mm thick pads and even with the multipliers are 40,39, 38, 38 the CPU never hits 80c while gaming.Last edited: Aug 24, 2017cdoublejj likes this. -
i was looking at replacement heatsinks and low and behold one has a thermal pad, mine has none, it's been a shop before as that's where i got it. more evidence it may just have a bad heat pipe, i'm not the only one who has hit these temps. it's also possible the 10cfm fan isn't up to par but, when it does kick up it makes noise but, i also have notable hearing loss. so maybe i might get another 10 cfm fan, if not just for a spare.
this page suggested modded 92c is normal but, less throttling,

it would be nice if there was better or a 3 heat pipe cooler from another laptop or other such cpu cooler mods. i have yet to find a decent laptop cooling pad. the fans in them are flismy thing ones it's not like i can take a computer fan and cut the motor out of the fam frame, well unless i use the sythe slip stream 15mm series, also though about using laptop blower fans with an angled duct, but, it would be nice to try a second heat sink and or fan if i can't get good data from the internet. i'm scrolling through the above thread. i wonder if any one offer heatpipe modification and installation services.
i also thought about finding a mini blower fan or drilling holes in the case to cool the mSATA SSD.
EDIT: just one of a few https://community.dell.com/thread/24309-are-my-gpucpu-and-ssd-temps-normal-m17xr4
looks like some are maxing at upper 80s after moddingLast edited: Sep 3, 2017deadsmiley likes this.
