I know the basic stats for the 920xm quad core with hyper threading at 3.2ghz.

I know the 720qm and 820qm cannot run full speed on all cores, their max rated speed is on 1 core.
However, I have heard that the 920xm will run at 3.2 on all cores. Is that true?

If thats not true, what makes it special besides unlocked multiplier?

What makes the 920XM special, is the fact that it is TDP unlocked and UncleWebb created the program ThrottleStop. The program allows you to increase the 920XM TDP from 55W up higher. Essentially raising the power ceiling on the chip. This allows it to sustain the turbo boost multiplier (24) for much longer. This gives the chip the ability to do 3.2GHz on all cores. It also has an unlocked multiplier, so if you want, you can overclock by increasing the multiplier and the TDP, as well as the FSB speed. I have put the 920XM through it's paces, and it's a heck of a chip. The only thing to keep in mind is that when you increase the TDP, you are also causing the chip to produce more heat. There are things like the CPU retention mod that can bring temps down, which in return allow you to run a higher TDP for everyday use. I know some people run the chips for everyday use at 90W or so. When I was benchmarking I was ran the chip with a multiplier of 26 and TDP of 125W. Thats definately not good for everyday use, but a lot of fun for benchmarking.

The other chips, Q720M, and 820 don't have unlocked TDP. I have a 540M that does have an unlocked TDP, so the 740M, and 840M might as well. Not sure, but they also have a locked multiplier. I know the 540M has a multiplier for one core at 21, and the other at 23, but when fully loaded and increased TDP, I can only run the chip at a 21 multiplier. Those are the main differances. The other chips, under full load will default to the lowest multiplier. The XM chips will default under load to where ever you set it as long as it has the power and heat capacity to do so.

afaik with throttlestop yes, you can make the xm series run at that speed (and higher) on all 4 cores

Edit: DR650 beat me on that and is far more aknowledged (is this even a word in english? xD) than i am with xm cpu

What makes it magic is the unlocked TDP/TDC & having unclewebb's Throttlestop. With Throttlestop you can run all cores higher than 3.2 .Look @ capture.

Thanks for the responses, I just want to make it crystal clear.
OK, with Throttlestop you can make the 920 and 940xm procs run all cores at full speed. They will not run full speed on all cores stock without Throttlestop?
Will Throttlestop let other i7 chips such as the 820qm run full speed on all cores?

without Throttlestop the 920/940 will not run @ those speeds. And only the XM procs have unlocked TDP/TDC ;)

I have a 540M with an unlocked TDP. ;). I can increase the FSB, and TDP and it's a beast of a dual core. But I wouldn't be suprised if the Q740M, and Q840M have unlocked TDP as well. I'd be interested in knowing that. Found out when I opened throttle stop. Certainly helped my benching. I know the 720M I have isn't TDP unlocked, nor is my 520M chip. So maybe the 40 series are??
