The problem is my 920xm oem is too hot at core0, 3 remaining core's temp is okay - at fulload, core0 reach 95oC while others rarely reach 90, usually from 80-85
i have no probs with 95s thing, but the really pain is seemly it cause throttle, i don't really call it throttle, but in game, the framerate sometime drop too much, 1x-2x and then craw up to 1xx right after few seconds, every game is the same like this
any idea about this problem :( , note that gpu temp is fine
my config: 920xm, gpu 5870s cfx, psu 240w and i'm using noctua nt-h1 as thermal paste

I have the same heat issue but on all cores. I tried the adjusting screw method but it doesnt help. The heat sink just doesnt screw on tight enough. Is their anything i can do about this?. atm i run my 920xm at x19 on all cores which reaches temps of 80-85 after like 40min on gameplay and just slowly gets hotter after a hour.

Ive heard of some users doing the retention mod method to make the screws screw in a bit more thus making it press harder against the CPU.
but it could be a risky choice as it may damage the CPU.

I suppose you could always take off the sink and see if it's bent at all and try straightening it somehow.

Last resort maybe a new heat sink is needed?

I'm assuming the fan and grills are clean?

Keep in mind that Intel does not use 100% accurate core temperature monitoring devices in their CPUs. A difference of +/- 5C between cores is often times just sensor error.

Try running ThrottleStop with the Log File option checked so you have a record of what your CPU is doing while gaming. Upload it to Free File Sharing Made Simple - MediaFire and post a link or send it to me so I can have a look.

Have a look in your log file. See that column called CHIPM? That stands for chipset clock modulation. Basically the chipset is telling the CPU to throttle and slow down to a crawl. This column and the CKMOD column should always be showing 100.0. Anything less and your CPU is being throttled. A reading of 25.0 means your CPU is running internally at approximately 25% of its designed speed. No wonder your game starts to play like crap.

    Code:
DATE TIME MULTI C0% CKMOD CHIPM BAT_mW TEMP
    01/01/12 10:10:10 24.00 16.0 100.0 25.0 0 90
    01/01/12 10:10:11 24.00 14.3 100.0 25.0 0 90
    01/01/12 10:10:12 24.00 14.0 100.0 25.0 0 89
    01/01/12 10:10:13 23.98 12.1 100.0 25.0 0 88
    01/01/12 10:10:14 24.00 8.4 100.0 25.0 0 83
    [B]01/01/12 10:10:15 23.45 35.2 100.0 100.0 0 100[/B]
    01/01/12 10:10:16 22.20 23.9 100.0 25.0 0 91
    01/01/12 10:10:17 23.99 15.4 100.0 25.0 0 90
    01/01/12 10:10:18 24.00 16.4 100.0 25.0 0 89
    01/01/12 10:10:19 24.00 14.6 100.0 25.0 0 89
This part of the log file explains the real problem. At 10:10:15, for 1 second, your CPU tries to go back to 100% of its rated speed. In 1 second the CPU heats up from 83C to 100C which starts the CPU throttling again. Your laptop then turns on chipset clock modulation immediately and sets that to 25% again to prevent your CPU from melting down.

What this is telling me is that your laptop is running way too hot and the CPU heatsink needs to be re-installed. When was the last time you opened your laptop and cleaned it out? If that doesn't solve anything then you need to replace the thermal paste. An overheating laptop is never going to be able to deliver full gaming performance. This is just basic maintenance for any gaming laptop so be prepared to do this on a regular basis.

Thanks for posting that log file. It shows exactly what is going on.

yes may be that's the problem, i have repaste with artic mx4 and now all 4 core stable at ~90, no throttle at all (chipm always stay at 100%), no gain from temp drop but i'm fine with it, as long as it stable and no throttle!
many thanks to you, happy new last year of human being =)!!!!

90c still seems a bit high to me. is the fan and grill all clean and free from dust?

Ok heres my log i got TS at 68/68 multi's set to stock 24. as you can see near end of log my CPU starts to throttle temps are in the 80's.
    ThrottleStopLog.txt

i get epic lag when these throttles occur

Stealth55: Your CPU temperature is still OK. Have you tried setting Chipset Clock Modulation to 100% and putting a check mark beside that ThrottleStop feature to power your way through this problem?

When Chipset clock modulation drops down to 12.5%, gaming will be a miserable slide show kind of experience. Hard to believe that Dell still hasn't got this right.

Your log file is interesting. When chipset clock modulation kicks in, this slows your CPU down internally and reduces power consumption. When that happens, this allows the CPU multiplier to increase because it is no longer limited by your turbo TDP settings. Higher multiplier tricks many users into thinking that their CPU is running great when really the opposite is true. Internally it is running like a slug. Chipset clock modulation is like a gerbel on a hamster wheel. He appears to be working hard but isn't accomplishing too much or moving forward very far. :)

checking in the chip and clock seemd to have fix it :D thank you very much
