Just bought and installed an OEM 940XM CPU for my R2,

However even before overclocking it im getting random power offs as if the power cord is pulled, I dont get bluecreens and it does not freeze it just simply shuts the entire laptop off.

it could happen after a few hours or even minutes. idle OR under load

I used IC7 Paste and the temperatures are around 35-40 idle 65-70 under load so its not overheating

Do you think the CPU is defective or have i possibly damaged the motherboard when i changed it?

Have you tried putting back your old CPU and seeing if exhibits the same issues? Perhaps something got shorted out..

Mick, run a prime95 (8 worker thread bench) on your cpu and see if its stable. If your cpu is defective, it will die fast in this test. you can monitor your temps, speeds etc via something like hwinfo64 to see if it freezes or dies when certain parameters occur

your laptop shuts off how? It just goes blackscreen, all your fans stop and everything is not powered?

Also, does the blue light on the power adaptor plug shut off?

Check your GPU temps too. It sounds like it could be a Temp shut down.

It may sound stupid but.... do you have the required 240W PSU?

    Specs now in sig.

(DR650SE) - The blue light on the power plug stays on when the power off occurs
(Slickdude80) ill try prime 95 now and yes the fans and everything just completely stop but i can press the power button to turn it back on almost straight away

All the temperatures are within the limits ive monitored them all even the GPUs

Ive had turbo boost disabled in the bios for the last few hours and it hasnt shut off once (yet)

Back on my old CPU now and it's all fine again.

I did notice in throttlestop that my tdp was 62w and when running prime 95 it would show 75w power consumption in hwinfo, Is this normal?

I thought that chip only had a 55w tdp
