So i just got my m17x-R2 today from craigslist, guy was in IT at my college actually.
Anyways, i tried reading about throttlestop and all that but im new to overclocking laptop CPU's.
So im pretty sure all i have to focus on is the TDP/TDC and multipliers based on what i read.
I tried out 90/70 and running 25x133 on all 4 cores as thats what i've heard is a good/max daily usage turbo mode OC.
I tried it and my CPU reached 99C max probably even 100C!!!!!! Is that normal?? it throttled too so im guessing its not even getting enough power.
Im guessing i have a bad paste job?
Stock all 4 cores turbo mode 2.2ghz does 81C max on Prime95 so temps are a big problem. If i wanted to overclock im guessing i'd have to repaste the CPU and maybe even a notebook cooler?
Should i try doing all 4 cores at a lower multiplier maybe around like 22/23? But if i do this, will turbo mode still do the automatic 3.3ghz one/two cores if the application only uses that many?
Thanks

First thing, rise the back of the laptop to warrant good airflow. This will help with temperatures. If the temp still are too high the only solution is to repaste.
Keep in mind one thing, on the R2 the XM cpus (920/940) instead of running 17/18x133 in turbo mode, they are stock @ 24/25x133 with 62W tdp across the 4 cores. (not 55W). -
Definitely do a repaste when you can and make sure the fan vents are clean.
I use 85/70 tdp daily and if I use Prime95 8 threads my CPU reaches 80-85c
This should be roughly the temp you get with a better paste and propping the back of laptop up with a book or something. -
your tdp at 85/70 is for all 4 cores at 25x133??
I just propped up the back with 2 bottlecaps, wow what a difference. Dropped around like 7-8C and the fan doesn't kick up as much or need to.
Max on Prime95 stock turbo mode was like 74C which is still kinda high compared to others but a lot better than before
I might activate the trip point in bios to lower so i can get a higher fan speed when running around like almost 80C.
Do i need to enable the "set multiplier" option in throttlestop? and leave it at "16" or "turbo mode"? I know i need to check the first two boxes but that one i've seen some ppl leave it alone while some check it.
Thanks -
so i set the tcp to 85/70 and checked set multiplier so the cpu runs 25x133 all cores.
Omg temps skyrocket.....HWinfo shows all cores running 3.3ghz and the temp just keeps rising until high 90's then it starts throttling and CPU runs around all 4 cores like 2.4ghz and its constantly changing from like 2.1ghz up to 2.4ghz -

The Set Multiplier parameter in ThrottleStop should be "Turbo." You have to repaste and clean out the fans and vents. You're running 15-20C too high. Drop TDP back to 62W/62A to restrict performance until the cooling issue is resolved.

Yea, I can run wPrime 1024 8 threads 100% load at 100 watts and only hit 90°C and no throttling through the entire run. You outta repaste and adjust the tension on the heatsink. In the wPrime run I don't get any throttling at 100W.
Granted I don't run 100W for everyday use. I run Folding@home and thats more stressful on the CPU than wPrime. At stock with a 5% bios OC and stock wattage it runs about 75°C and upto 80° based on ambient temps. In the summer I may have to down clock. -
Pewpew - I find prime95 heats up my CPU a whole lot more than wprime and won't maintain a 25x multi at 100watts so bare that in mind -
Okay thanks guys, gonna take a look at the fans but when I looked at the bottom of the m17x they looked clean. Definitely gonna repaste before over locking he CPU anymore.
I'll just over clock the 285m's for now and see how they do. -
One last question about the CPU, looked like turbo mod wasn't enabled in BIOS when i checked so i just enabled Turbo mode as well as the 5% OC.
Is it normal for the CPU to be constantly changing multipliers and such while running Prim95 or anything? It constantly changed from 2.23ghz up to 2.7ghz or around that. Max temp was 81C on the first core and 80C and under for the other 3 cores.
Weird....playing BF3, temps went up to 90C and the CPU stayed at an even higher clock, 1st core almost like 3ghz. Im just gonna turn off 5% OC and leave it alone. My GPU temps look good and seems like i will be able to OC those a good amount.
Edit 2: Yea so even stock settings....1st core reached 92C max playing BF3 for like 20 minutes. Seems that the game clocked it up to 4.1ghz while the max for the other 3 was the expected 3.3ghz. Does intel's turbo mode do that? push one core all the way up to 4.1ghz? -
It shouldn't reach that high (4.1ghz) if the multi is set at 25x in throttlestop.
Even a 5% OC would only get you to 3.5ghz without a multiplier change. -

920xm/940xm chips on every other laptop will work, across the 4 cores, with a turbo multiplier of 17x133(920xm) and 18x133(940xm), both @55W tdp
R2 Bios will set by default turbo multiplier @ 24x133(920xm) and 25x133(940xm) @ 62W tdp.
In this case i will leave alone the 5% OC and use Throttlestop to just adjust the TDP, without touching the multipliers.
Even reducing multipliers with TS to, let say, 23x133 (3Ghz across the 4 cores will lead to a really good ammount of OC vs the stock settings of this chips. Besides benchmark, there is no need to punish the chip running at so high frequency/TDP -
im just gonna leave my CPU alone for now, not worth possibly messing it up after i just got it. GPU's are overclocking real nice on stock voltages though. I think i can do 690mhz core daily stable on stock voltage. I have SLI GTX 285m
940xm really high temps/help?
