I just got a 980m off ebay for my ranger.
The only problem was that it didnt have the dell original bios on it, but a quick search here got the right one, and the card worked great.
The only thing is i put too much thermal paste on it so it iot a bit too hot, around 86C so i decided to do a quick repaste, popped it open, removed the sink, cleaned the card and the heatsink and repasted it.
As soon as i powered it on, i've smelled a familliar smell and i knew something was wrong. The pc booted up fine and after 5 seconds on desktop it BSOD on me.
Took the card out without removing the sink and saw a blown resistor (or is it a capacitor, I have no idea).

Can this be fixed?

I have my dead 880m that I can use as a do or card.
Do you think it's a good idea to bring it to an electronics repair shop to try and replace the broken part.
It smelled like a capacitor, and it spilled the yellow fluid all around the broken part, but its not on the pics because i cleaned it up with alcohol on a q-tip.
But since im not an electronics guy i have no idea what the part accually is... -

Happened to me with a 1070 in a Ranger.
If you can return the card that would be the easier route vs a shop (possibly) fixing it. -

eBay is 30 day return window I believe. At least in USA.

However I think there can be several ways the diode functions, even though they might have the same appearance.

But that would be for the repair shop to confirm.
I have to agree with the others, first option is return as faulty.cavkic likes this. -
It is a blown power mosfet. It is surface mount, can be repaired with a fine tip iron, I've done these before for equipment control boards that I work on.
I would try to do a return on it first.
If it cannot be returned, I could replace the mosfet for you, if you like. it already doesn't work, and a repair attempt can't make it worse.cavkic likes this. -
Thanks man, nice of you to offer help.
The seller responded and said right away he'll take it back and send a replacement.
