    A/C perfomance possible on battery?

    I've gone through a dozen power management options to turn everything to max performance modes on battery. I've adjusted the settings within the Nvidia control panel to high performance modes and I've edited each game profile to ensure the Nvidia GPU is selected. In the power management menu in control panel I've set it to high performance and in the Alienware power manager app and anywhere else I could find anything related.

    No matter what I've done I still get horrible battery performance. I used the benchmark in Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition and scored about 19-20fps on battery. With A/C I'm maxing out at 60 (vsync on).

    I've installed bios A08 and the latest 280.26 Nvidia drivers. Btw this is not only my first Alienware laptop but my first laptop in general so I guess I've just assumed that you can get identical performance on battery as long as you adjust the power management settings properly. In this case I've still failed.

    Am I wasting time trying to achieve the impossible? I'm starting to think that it's really just not possible or that I've messed something up. Please keep in mind I'm trying to achieve identical performance to A/C mode here.

    Can anyone please confirm this for me?

    Did you change the processor % use during battery?

    Battery, More Options, High Performance(Or whatever you use), Advanced Power Settings.

    Scroll down and change the processor and gpu settings.

    You probably won't have "Identical" performance as plugged in, that's when you have 100% power on full blast. Your welcome to put the processor % to 100%, but something tells me its a bad idea.

    Thanks for your suggestion however I've double checked my settings and I already had it at 100% :(

    So in this case I'm going to just assume that it's technically not possible to get identical performance on battery as with A/C.. Oh well.. I'm a little disappointed now.

    You can't expect a gaming rig to work at 100% on battery.

    I think 30 minutes is generous as well, you're looking more at 15-20 minutes max playing a newer game like Street Fighter.

    Ahh see I wasn't aware of this. I figured a $2000+ Alienware rig was meant for gaming whether you were on battery or A/C. I just figured you'd get garbage battery time if anything. But good to know, I'll just be sure to stick close to outlets from now on.

    the battery can't supply the needed watt for the GPUs to perform at full, sadly it's the same for all brands of gaming laptops.

    I am at about 125w on ac in game battery is 93w so I think 30min is doable but only if it could sustain the load

    What I don't get it I can get better performance using my Mac's built-in 6750 or whatever it is, on battery, BETTER than my alienware on battery. This doesn't make much sense.

    When I originally checked the settings, my processor % was at 5% D:

    I made it 75% but I never use it on battery so eh.

    Impossible. The battery can supply anywhere even remotely near the required watts to have the cpu, and gpu(s) run at their max TDP.

    At max CPU and GPU load you are probably pulling twice as much current as the battery can continuously provide. This is why every laptop with a discrete GPU downclocks the GPU and sometimes CPU to some extent while on battery. At lower clock rates the power consumption at full load is much lower.

    Without this throttling, your system would power off as soon as you put any load on it. See the m14x forum for details of this before a BIOS update made throttling more aggressive and prevented users from circumventing it.
