AMD Catalyst 12.1 Win 7 | Vista 64-bit driver download from Guru3D.com This is the 12.1 WHQL. Just install over existing driver,if you get a BSOD just run the setup again. It'll work
-
First install dell driver Drivers and Downloads | Dell [Canada]
Reboot, switch to the ATi GPU and install the latest driver from here ATI Catalyst? Mobility Display Driver
Please note: while trying to install the ATi driver, your system will probably give you BSOD. No worries! Let the system restart and continue again with this driver installation.
It all depends for each person. I personally had no issues with any drivers, but it looks like the new drivers from ATi has improved the performance for the GPU.
Hope I helped somehow...
There is also a preview driver of catalyst 12.2 which is supposed to be better than 12.1. Here is the direct link http://www2.ati.com/drivers/hotfix/catalyst_preview/amd_catalyst_12.2_preview_32-64.exe -
let's download it and try it.....
-
Ok thanks I will try this drivers out, Im still on 8.92 11.12, Anybody on a particular one that they think is really stable? Because in drivers terms latest isint always the best.

The 12.2 previews listed above have been the best for me

It looks like ATi new driver is out 12.2 ATI Catalyst? Mobility Display Driver
-
I downloaded and installed this new driver, got the BSOD. It restarted in safe mode, I reinstalled the driver again, this time the driver install LOG said the Display Driver installation failed. Any suggestions?
Edit: When I checked the Device Manager it showed both the AMD and the Intel HD Integrated graphics drivers as missing. I used the "Update Driver" option from Device Manager under the 6990 and it brought it and my Integrated graphics back up however I do not know if it is the latest driver or if it rolled back. Driver Version is 8.851.2.0 and any help would be appreciated.
Now this boat anchor keeps saying the Hard Disk requires a check but the check is canceled without any input from the user each time it boots, Alien Autopsy stops working when I try to use it to perform a Hard Disk scan, after it tells me there are over 1 million bad sectors on the hard drive. $2000 of wasted money. Dell really screwed this brand up. -
Question for anyone; is 50-55 degrees bad for 6990m idle temps?
Thanks.
EDIT: Alienware laptops are actually very good. Yes Dell doesn't always get updates/drivers right but i wouldnt say its a waste of $2000. Try what i said above. -
-
I'm getting temps of around 50-55 C idle as well with stock paste.

Does it install/work ok?
Thanks -

Link, the 12.2 official drivers are 8.950...these are 8.951. I wouldn't install these unless there was a specific issue that these addressed and you really needed it
I'm still on the 12.2 previews and i'm leaving it there until i encounter something that requires an update -
CCC version is 12.01xxx -

It's funny. Up until 2/3 months ago the forum was awash with posts etc whenever new amd drivers came out. Everyone in a rush to try them. Now it seems the enthusiasm for new drivers has faded. Maybe everyone has become fed up with the constant driver updates & playing Russian roulette with their machine when installing them. At least I know I am. I am on the 12.1 drivers and very much doubt I'll update them again anytime soon. Everything seems to run fine so no need to put myself through the stress. Although I am sure some game will come out soon forcing the unpalatable need to update.

Bumping this old thread for a question.
Is there any game currently out that has issues with 12.2 preview or 12.2 preview is clear for all games (Skyrim, BF3, Rage, etc) -
-
Uuugg.
So I just downloaded Catalyst 12.2 preview and ran it. I allowed the update of everything there (everything was checked during the installation). It started it and at some point, the screen flickered and turned black for about 10 seconds. Then I got a BSOD!
What's up?! Where do I go to look for a dump of what happened?
edit:
Wow!
When my PC rebooted, a poopup said "No AMD drivers installed" or something like this and my graphics are pretty ugly! -
Ok I need help...
So after the issues above, I try starting CCC and it doesnt do anything.
So I try uninstalling CCC but it doesnt do anything.
So finally, I restart the installation of 12.2 preview and it seems to go fine until the end where a popup says again, "No AMD drivers installed"!!! And then, when I try to run CCC, it says
"Catalyst Control Center cannot be started. There are currently no settings that can be configured using CCC"
Help!
*EDIT*
Oh man! Here is what I did.
I went in Device Manager and opened Display Adapters. Both (AMD and Intel HD) had an exclamation mark. So I right clicked on the AMD, went to update drivers, browsed my computer to c:/AMD/AMD_Catalyst_12.2_Preview_32-64/Packages/Drivers/Display/W76A_INF/C7132259.inf
When I opened this, I picked 6900M Series. It installed. Rebooted and now its fixed.
But I have no clue what drivers I am on. Did it write tons of trash? Should I uninstall, clean, reinstall?
CCC opens now but I really don't know if I have the correct drivers. How do I check this for my AMD and Intel cards? And what about the others devices? If I want to compare my drivers with the correct ones to have, where do I look? -
Then click the information tab and select software.
Post a screenshot of that window. The driver however should be 8.940 and CCC version 12.2. -
driver: 8.94-120120a-132259E-ATI
Catalyst version: 12.2
2D: 8.01.01.1231
Direct 3D: 7.14.10.0890
OpenGL: 6.14.10.11472
CCC version: 2012.0120.2218.39907
Anyways to validate all the other drivers (of other devices) are up to date? -
I had the same issues the guy above had and fixed it the same way.
Here is the information I get when I follow your directions to pull the software data:
Driver Packaging Version: 8.852.2-110609a-120503C-Dell
Catalyst Version: 12.2
Provider: Advanced Micor Devices
2d Driver Version: 8.01.01.1152
Direct 3D version: 7.14.10.0833
Open GL Version: 6.14.10.10765
Catalyst Control Center Version: 2012.0120.2218.39907
So what does it take to get this computer to actually accept the new driver? -
It's not the computer, SlimShady. It's AMD drivers. They are notoriously buggy, and have been for a very long time. AMD has always had issues trying to hang onto a previous driver and the best solution is to do a clean driver installation that results in all of the old driver files being erased from the hard drive and all AMD registry entries being deleted before installing a new driver. Unless your system reverts to the Windows Standard VGA driver the old AMD drivers will almost always be "stuck" in place and prevent the new drivers from installing properly.
A manual install will most likely take care of it. Try going into Device Manager, open the display adapter properties, click the button to update drivers and browse to the folder where the extracted drivers are found. Manually select the new drivers.
For the next AMD driver update, or if manually installing does not work out correctly, see AMD Video Driver Clean Installation Guide. -

Followed your instructions Mr. Fox, now it says I don't have a card installed at all. First it said it was the wrong card and wouldn't install the drivers, I rebooted and it now says there is no card installed AND my integrated card is showing as not having a driver either.
This is with the 12.2 preview driver and going STEP BY STEP through the instructions provided in the link.
Got the card to show again but................"Windows cannot verify the digital signature for the drivers required for this device. A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or that might be malicious software from an unknown source. (Code 52)"
Can someone please provide a link to the OFFICAL DIGITALLY SIGNED 12.2 Preview Drivers and CCC as well as detailed instructions on how to install them in an Alienware since apparently this isn't as easy as it is on a non-botique computer? -
After the whole clean-up process you have to start with the Stock Dell 6990M driver that is available from the Dell site.
Once that is installed and working perfectly, use this: AMD Catalyst 12.2 WHQL – BenchmarK3D
You might get a BSOD, you might not. If you do, just restart and try again. That's just the nature of AMD GPU driving updating, I'd know I used a 6990M for a few months before switching to a GTX 580M. -
I'm assuming the mobility version is the one I want correct? There are two Windows7 64bit versions.
Thanks! -

Yes, you'll need the mobility ones.
