AMD Catalyst™ 12.8 – What’s New
There is a new WHQL driver coming out just now. All credits due to asder @guru3d.
-
Awesome! I knew this was coming this week. @catalystcreator hasn't even tweeted it yet.

Thanks for the post dude
-
Cool! I'll try to get these on my laptop when I get it.
-
Already got this off of Guru3D! Thanks anyway!
-
The 12.8 whql have appeared on the amd site for download as have the release notes
AMD Catalyst
however it does not mention any performance highlights, just resolved issues, does any one know what are performance increases, are they just the ones included as part of the 12.7 beta and caps? -
bigtonyman Desktop Powa!!!
Thanks for the link, will try it out and see how it preforms.
-
srry if this is a dumb question but do we need to download the AMD Catalyst Mobility 12.8 or would the amd catalyst 12.8 version work (are there any important differences)? AMD catalyst 12.8 ( AMD Catalyst) mentions that the 6900m series is supported under it, but I am not sure what the difference would be between that and the mobility version.

HaloGod2012 Notebook Virtuoso
so which should i choose to install for my 7970m?
-
-
thanks for the rep guys!
@halogod2012: i installed the first one "AMD Catalyst 12.8 Win 8 | Win 7 | Vista (64-bit) " but it shouldn't matter much. There has not been any problem so far. Playing through Sleeping Dogs is a blast -
Are you able to check to see if it, in any way, resolves the issues with enduro?
-
nah i turned it off permanently and since there is no mention of it in the change log i figure why bother? Besides, my laptop is plugged in 24/7 anyway.
-
Alright. Well I planned to turn it off anyways (using Fn+F7 unless there is a more permanent way) but if Enduro gets fixed then I'd like to be able to use it's battery saving functions as well...
-
yeah i turned it off with the FN+F7 key combo. Seeing as the Clevo/Sager guys are petitioning for a fix like that, it will be a while. And most people here seems to turn off enduro/optimus as soon as they have the option provided to them so yeah.

Is there much of a performance increase with this new driver?

CptXabaras Overclocked, Overvolted, Liquid Cooled
Does the secondary card stay idle at startup or does it stay at a wierd clock?
with 12.7beta at startup my secondary stay at 250/1000 (cards are flashed @770/1000 1.05V) unless i run a 3D app, then it goes back at 150/300 Mhz. -
bigtonyman Desktop Powa!!!
tried to install over the dell stock drivers and it didn't work for me. Didn't investigate to hard though as its not a huge deal for me atm.
-
if it's all hassle like R3 was with 6990M drivers i'll pass and keep dell drivers for my 7970M.
works perfectly. -
Not working with 6990m, couldn't install, tried almost every possible way
-
Any luck for crossfire M17x R2 people installing this without problems?
-
I tried to download these from the AMD site and the download cancels itself every time I try to download the actual drivers... Are the ones posted here safe to use ?
-
CptXabaras Overclocked, Overvolted, Liquid Cooled
I'm going to install them in a few minutes and will report back
Installed them without any issue. I'll test them this evening, but if they work as 12.7betas they will be good to go for me
EDIT2:
2nd card clock bug still present....meh! I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that i always disable ULps after driver installation.. I shall try to leave it activated since i OC from Overdrive in CCC if i need to. -

yeah if you hover on the links you will see they are either from AMD or ATI so yeah they are safe unless you dont trust AMD lol.

To those having installation issues...
Do a custom install of these drivers...and choose "display driver" only. Nothing else.
Then install over the dell drivers. -

according to the blog post just released:
AMD Catalyst 12.8 Whats New

Just tried custom install, got BSOD while installation "atikmpag.sys", followed by a reboot with VGA desktop -

Then I tried installing 12.8 display driver manually through device manager at safe mode and during reboot, got BSOD atikmpag.sys error -
Now all I need is for either Dell or Intel to acknowledge the USB 3.0 issues with hard drives and we can go our merry ways but that's an issue for a different thread.

Meaning: Use the AMD installation manager and "uninstall all AMD software on computer" (or something like that)
Then run driver sweeper, check off "AMD Display", run, reboot.
Once rebooted, you should be running on stock vga drivers...The headaches in your install are probably due to the integrated graphics card. If you disable it, you'll be able to install any drivers you wish.
Something else that has worked for me once you've cleaned out your computer: At this point, install the intel hd3000 drivers...reboot
Then install the amd cats -

Hi all
I just tried this drivers with my fresh-install of Windows 8 RTM on my R2.
Installation went fine, CrossfireX working, but my cards are now recognized as FirePro, not Radeon 5870s...
This happened with the last beta and leaked drivers after 12.6, and I tried the same to fix it. Uninstalled 12.8, Installed Dell stock drivers (using Windows 7 compatibility and running as Administrator) here, my cards get recognized fine, then installed 12.8 on top of Dell stock...
Again, the cards change to ATI FirePro XXXXX (sorry don't have my AW here to check for the specific number)
PErformance is good, still don't have anything to bench, but Diablo III runs pretty fine.
Will do some more testing once I finish getting the beast up and running. -
Hmmm, installed but got the message "With warnings" whatever the hell that means. All seems right but i cant open CCC. Get some implemntation issue. normally i get around that by disabling Avast, but not this time.
-
Try this Joe: Catalyst Control Center Wont Start Fix BenchmarK3D
Or just re-install on top. If that don't work, Driver Sweeper & Windows Clean up Utility to get rid of all CCC elements and reinstall.
Also 12.8 WHQL 7900 mod: AMD Catalyst 12.8 WHQL 7900 MOD BenchmarK3D
It's a good idea to bookmark Benchmark3D -
i tried installation with the 12.8 catalyst whql, however it caused windows to have issues (bsod) and I had to use a system restore to get access back into windows...does anyone know if the 12.8 mobility catalyst whql is any better?
-
Geo, you absolute champion!!!!
Worked perfectly.
Thank you +rep Sir! -
Getting a solid 60fps in Skyrim with High Res on ultra.
Wither 2 on High settings is a solid 60-70fps.
MW3 is about 3million fps. : -
i can't install this driver over the 12.7 Beta. Tried ever method i know.
-
Anyho, did you try using the link Geo provided. Worked for me. -
So are these drivers an improvement over the 12.6? i just updated to 12.6 just yesterday lol
I really don't play the games they said are improved.
