As a counterpoint, here is AnandTech's article on the 8970m, calling it effectively EQUIVALENT to the 680m. AnandTech | AMD Launches Radeon HD 8970M

Basically, the 8970m is a slightly (6% maximum, with dynamic clocking) overclocked 7970m. If the 54% faster than a 680m figure was correct, than the 7970m would be ~43% faster than a 680m, which I don't think is the case.

    Sorry :(

They probably tested a couple dozen games and benchmarks, and then picked the one most favorable to AMD... Just like always. (Not hating on AMD, nVidia and Intel both do this too)

Or HashCat/JohnTheRipper/Bitcoin Mining; AMD GPUs seem to really kill nVidia at tasks involving any sort of hashing. (though then I'd be surprised at only 54% faster)

780m seems like a beast of a card so far, but good to see some competition from the red side. The consumer benefits in the long run. ;)

I will just wait until the final release of the new cards and start testing them out to give a word on this. They are both great companies and they both are good in some games and bad on some others.

Can't wait for the gamers and independent reviews of both the 780m and 8970M. Nvidia are just so expensive for their top end cards (they are great though!)

Seeing as how the 8970m is essentially a 7970m with a 50mhz overclock (same die same process) 54% increase in performance over a GTX 680m is laughably false. It's probably on par if not slightly better than a GTX 680m. I'll be waiting for a 8990m. . . .

lol 54%, I doubt if it can be even 3% higher as news keep saying its only 6% higher than 7970M.

You're better off buying a 7970m it's probably cheaper too.

The score of 86FPS in Battlefield 3 of xfire 8970M's make me think to upgrade over my 680M's.

Sure that's gonna be good amount of performance difference, for a short time I thought to upgrade to 8970M's over my 680M's but I changed my mind from what I read on the internet.. A friendly tip, if you gonna upgrade make sure to pick a 8970M and not 7970M, even if they are close in performance the 8970M still one year newer card and that matters in world of technology.

I'm working on a desktop build at the moment so my laptop isn't going to be receiving much love for a while. :(

Not true. If they are rebrands... which they are, it matters didly squat since they are the exact same technology. They only advantage is they would be out of the box new.

And for the record a 680m still spanks a 7970/8970 when it comes to OCing. Keep your 680m's mate
