    Hi,

Well, I am just about to purchase the M17x R3 with the 120hz screen and 580m, but have a few questions regarding Optimus first.

From my understanding, the 580m and 120hz combo has Nvidia Optimus with it. Now this is great and all (not really), but I would like to know how this effects my biodegradability. For example in a year or two, when I want to upgrade my card to a lets say 7990m, would it work in this laptop? or would the Optimus interfere with the AMD cards?

    Thanks in advance,
    Nate

False. The 120 Hz models do not have Optimus enabled, much like the 460M/120Hz models. 3D Vision is not compatible with Optimus.

The proposed 7990m won't work the the 120hz screen. Even if it did support 3d, the built-in emitter is designed for nvidia 3d. People tried getting the 120hz screen to work with the 6970m, and they got the beeps of death. As mentioned above, the 3d 580m does not have optimus. The 120hz screen is not supported by the IGP, so the IGP is disabled. Ivy bridge will supposedly have this resolved.

The 580m with the 3d isn't compatible with optimus.

Well, this throws a wrench in it.

It is nice to know Optimus is not with it, but then how does graphic switching work? No switching?

And the beep of death doesn't sound good for upgrades. If this is the case, then Might have to get the 6990m ;( I mean switching to to the IGP is amazing and extends battery life amazingly. Losing that feature would be like a downgrade, just for the 120hz screen.
