Make sure they are compatible with the 6870M cards first. Instead of using the direct link above try to see if there are updates from the main drivers page on the ATI website (there you should be prompted to enter your system info).

11.6 are working fine on my system thus far :D
When I get the chance I will try BFBC2 and Crysis2 (these are the only PC games I play)

Every time ATI release a new driver they usually update the software suite as well (CCC). You should have the option of updating either CCC or the drivers themselves. Usually I update the lot using the link above.

Make sure you install the CAP as well.

The direct link of Catalyst 11.6 Mobility Win7-64 WHQL drivers is www2.ati.com/drivers/mobile/11-6_mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc_ocl.exe. Guys, use this link instead. It is official from AMD.

For those who want to obtain the latest HDMI audio driver, you should download the desktop driver.

Double click it to let it be extracted, but do not proceed the installation. The driver is located at:

    11-6_vista64_win7_64_dd_ccc_ocl\Packages\Drivers\WDM\HDMICE\W764a

The driver version is 7.12.0.7701, dated 03/29/2011.

Insert the WDM folder into another folder extracted from Mobility video driver. CCC will detect and install AMD HDMI Audio drivers.

    @zero2005
Just download the file from the direct link and install it. It has everything you need, eliminating the need of individual downloads, but CAP (for crossfire AMD video cards) is not included. I shared the same predictment as you back then, as I was previously familar to only nvidia video card. Trust me, that direct link is all you need.

    Did you update the driver, CCC or both? Your driver details should be as follows;

    Driver Packaging Version 8.861-110524a-119608C-ATI
    Catalyst Version 11.6
    Provider ATI Technologies Inc.
    2D Driver Version 8.01.01.1162
    2D Driver File Path /REGISTRY/MACHINE/SYSTEM/ControlSet001/Control/CLASS/{4D36E968-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}/0001
    Direct3D Version 7.14.10.0841
    OpenGL Version 6.14.10.10834
    Catalyst Control Center Version 2011.0524.2352.41027

CAPS are a method for ATI to deliver driver fixes and game updates faster (rather than having to wait for a new driver version - in this case 11.6)

Sorry if I have said anything wrong. From I understand from this site:

So, CAP is for M17x with dual video cards. For that, we can exclude M17x-R3 from installing this software.

As for driver fixes and game updates faster, I think what you mean is AMD driver hotfix.

As you can see from my specs I dont have the 6870M cards so I am not up to speed regarding their software configurations - hence I suggested he should check 11.6 is compatible from the main ATI drivers page.

Re CAP. These are applicable to single card and dual card machines. This is the site I use and if you want to learn more about CAP's in general I suggest you have a read over this page :D

I see in the release notes that this is still present:

The following notebooks are not compatible with this release:
•Switchable Graphics enabled notebooks using Intel® chipsets.

Which pretty much rules out the R3 for being supported.

I have tried every release and had the same issues (doesnt like my external monitor, cant use Fn F4/F5 for brightness control). the stock m17 qnd M18 drivers work perfect hoewever....
Can anyone verify if they have seen these issues in 11.6? or has anyone heard ANYTHING about dell releasing a new official driver?

    Hey there deltawing,

Give these new drivers and CAP profiles a go.
Dell most likely won't be releasing anymore new drivers for the R2 GPUs; well not anytime soon anyway if they ever will again is another question. :(

    Cheers. :)

How did you get this to work? I attempted to download and when I execute the file it wants to download another file? And then when that is completed the "install" button in that window does nothing, the finish window does nothing either. Nothing happens.

It says it isnt compatible with my system, check system settings.

Update: I dont believe I was able to successfully download 11.6 earlier, it is taking much longer now and I believe this is the real file, will update soon if so, I hope this works, Witcher 2 still doesnt work with x-fire even with 11.5b and CAP5.

Dunno what the hell your doing, I've had every new driver straight from ATI/AMD working fine on m17x r3 with the ability to switch to intel still working fine aswell.

This includes 11.6 which i installed last night.

try to adjust the brightness with the Fn keys.....most of us cant with reference drivers.....also, depending on resolution of external monitor, you might have issues...some do, some dont. the switching works fine on any driver so far.

I finally took my first nervous step away from dell stock driver and installed these. Seem to be working well. However one thing bugging me. Under 3d Mark 06, dxdiag & the display adapter in the device manager my card is now displayed as a very generic '6900 series'. Before it would show as a 6970m. Does this sound right?

    @Scottyboy99
Dell default driver will identify your card as 6970M, while the AMD driver will refer it by its series, aka 6900 series. 6970M is a part of 6900 series.
So, don't worry. It is perfectly normal. :)

I was running 11.5b with super results and installed 11.6 this morning. No issues and it's working nicely. My Vantage score increased a few points. Updated signature with new results. CCC version is the same as 11.5b Catalyst package (11.6), but the driver version is newer.

Ive noticed quite a few issues with Bad Company 2. The game frequently crashes to desktop after a map has loaded and when it finally does work, every 10 mins or so the FPS falls to about 1FPS (this lasts for approx 5 secs).

I'm having some issue with Shift2. Since the installation i had the game randomly crash twice on desktop. Performance is fine, running the game at native res everything maxed out and it runs at a solid and constant 60FPS. (v.sync on, antialiasing on High and anisotropic filtering 16x, all setting on their max).

I'm trying to figure out whats wrong

Yes you can install them just do not uninstall the old driver and instead just run the installer for the new driver installing over the current driver..

It will keep the graphics switching intact and get you the new driver you want .

In the past i would have never done it this way but i have had 0 issues so its all good.

someone should start a thread for each card, or an all encompassing thread for the various cards showing the "best known" driver, and/or how to go about installing it. i'm coming from nvidia cards, and nvidia drivers are super easy to install. so far, i'm kinda regretting going ATI :/ i'm trying real hard to like them though!

I'm not having any issues with 11.6. If you are, try the 11.5b Catalyst package. It includes the HD audio drivers and other apps that you have to manually add to the 11.6 Mobility Catalyst package using desktop drivers. I found 11.5b to work very well also.

There may already be a thread for the M17x with NVIDIA cards. I haven't checked since it is not relevant to my system.

The only thing I've really found not to like about AMD graphics is the rigmarole of stripping out all of the AMD drivers and software to achieve a clean installation every time in order for the Catalyst update to be a complete success. (If I don't do that every time, CCC refuses to launch.) I have found my HD5870 CFX setup to provide excellent performance, so the rigmarole is mainly an inconvenience. However, I never had to jump through hoops to install updated NVIDIA drivers.

I've been an ATI/AMD GPU fan for a very time. I was very enthusiastic about trying out NVIDIA products when I purchased a Dell XPS M1730 in August of 2009. Two things basically ruined that for me. First, the Dell had 8700M GT SLi and the cards were defective. Those were replaced under warranty with 8800M GTX SLi modules and those were defective. The M1730 was replaced with a new system and it also had defective 8800M GTX SLi modules. Eventually, I received my R2 as a replacement and what a gigantic change for the better.

Second, I bought my wife a Pavilion dv6449us notebook. It had a defective integrated NVIDIA GPU and hp refused to accept any responsibility for selling me defective merchandise. (Mega kudos to Dell for how they handled the situation.) We ended up as class members in the NVIDIA GPU litigation and received a crappy Compaq CQ56 worth less than $300 as a replacement. It has an integrated AMD HD4250 GPU and it's an improvement over the NVIDIA integrated GPU the Pavilion had, but the rest of the system is a pile of junk.

So, I don't really have a good track record with NVIDIA products and find it challenging to be enthusiastic about their hardware.

11.6 has been the first driver that has actually fixed a problem that I desperately needed fixed. Before this Shift 2 wouldn't use CrossFire, and ran like crap in general. Now it is butter smooth, and I actually enjoy it.

You have to install them over the top of the existing Dell Driver otherwise Graphics switching is not going to work and just BSOD on you.

If your signature is correct and you have the R2, you'll want to be sure and do a clean driver install to ensure the Catalyst software functions properly. (This will only work if you have installed the vBIOS update from support.dell.com. AMD reference drivers will not install with the original vBIOS.)

If you have an M18x with switchable graphics, please follow the advice from Quadzilla to avoid problems with the Intel IGP.

I can provide instructions for now...

    • Uninstall the ATI/AMD software in Control Panel
    • Boot into Safe Mode and run Driver Sweeper
    • Boot back into normal Windows mode and run CCleaner's registry tool
    • Install new CCC package
    • Enjoy the trouble-free clean driver install

i made the change, followed the steps, installed the new drivers and the app profile and crysis 2 went up from 20 FPS to 50-60 FPS woohaa :D Dell drivers sux x)

had small problem though, when I tried to remove the dell drivers from Control Panel via the ATI install manager, i got BSOD, i remember that happened to me once, after removing it from the control panel, the ATI drivers fall back to the old DELL drivers, .. which dont play well with the new vBOIS. just had to remove the drivers manually in safe mode from device manager, so windows could fall on the VGA drivers, and then all went smooth.

    thanx !

I had upgraded my M17xR3 with a 6870m to 11.6, but recently it started to hang on a gray or black screen or BSODing when I was running WoW in windowed mode and Firefox. The bugcheck was 0x116 driver failure on the ATI drivers.

I've just rolled back to the stock drivers to see if it stabilizes.

I update mine to the latest CCC and CAP as well. My 4870s work without any problems. I was running Crysis 2 for over half an hour with 40-60 FPS (as FRAPS reported) on hardcore settings. GPUZ reported highest temperature was around 74 C. FF14 also works and it didn't crash as well so all is good with me :D
