I just reformatted my M17x just because I felt like it was time for a fresh start. Prior to the reformat I updated my ATI drivers to ones I found in the forums here. If I walked away from my computer for a decent amount of time, half an hour, I would come back and the screen would be black and there would just be a mouse cursor. I thought the reformat would take care of this, but the problem is still persisting. I even downloaded the latest drivers from the dell support site (12/14/2010). If it hit windows + l and get back to the login screen, I can type my password in (screen still black, only mouse cursor at this point) and once I hit enter to log back on my screen reappears. Does anybody know whats going on possibly? I tried googling it but not much luck on that end.
Thanks!

Try uninstall the ATI drivers and re-install them again.

My issues were related to sleep/resume....i just ended up coming back to the system that had shut down and restarted due to a critical stop. I found that this was related to puting the laptop to sleep - wether or not this is something you have done, i dont know. If your getting these things happen without putting to sleep, then its not quite the same issue as mine but could be very closely related.
My issues consisted of:
I found that the laptop would sleep normally, as long as you dont close the lid to put it to sleep. It may "seem" to resume normally, if you do this and it "may" seem to work ok but I was finding that once the lid had been closed to sleep....(and without restarting)...eventually, I would return to a rebooted system forced by a critical stop error related to the video cards. (sleep issue supposedly cured with vbios but doesnt seem to work 100% with AMD drivers)
If this sounds like you, maybe try what I put in the linked thread above.
I was running 10.12 but have since reverted to 10.10e modded desktop drivers which have given me a slight boost and I am yet to have come back to a blank screen or rebooted from shutdown event. I reinstalled Windows prior to this to make sure everything was sqeaky clean, to be on the safe side. Another fellow NBR'er put a great guide to a clean install here (great work Dave!):

Otherwise, maybe try uninstalling your current driver and reinstalling. If that works, great, otherwise, I would maybe look at a clean OS install....thats what i have done so far. -
I have all my settings to make my laptop sleep of though, unless I go through the start menu which is the odd part. I just reformatted my computer, but I guess I didn't do the nuclear format haha. It is so odd though it didn't happen with the last driver set though.
