    Hello everyone,

I feel like my CPU fan is acting weird.

    It's either at:
    0rpm (completely quiet)
2000 rpm (practically silent as well, almost no noise)
4600 rpm (sounds like a vacuum cleaner).

I can hear it uses different RPM's for a couple of seconds when ramping up or down between these 3 different RPM settings, but I don't have access to those when making a custom fan profile.

My biggest issue is not that it's very loud when under heavy load (That is part of the reason I bought this machine, the cooling).

But if I watch a movie 2000rpm is not enough to cool it, so it will frequently go to vacuum cleaner mode at 4600rpm which cools it down VERY fast, then the fan will change to 2000rpm again, until the temperature is back up and then it starts over again.

The change in noise is very apparent, and so is the cooling. Is there no inbetween? Im sure, say, 3000rpm would be sufficient to cool it, while also being alot less noisy.

If I force the RPM to 2000 I can watch the temp rise (slowly) all the way to 80C+ where I will manually turn it down again to avoid any damage. If i force it to 4600rpm-vacuum-mode it will stay at like 40C, which, although very nice, is not worth the trade-off in noise at all. I'd be more than happy with it being quiet and sitting at 60c (all of these are just examples, but I hope you understand what I mean)

I guess what I'm asking, how do I set it to something inbetween 0-2000-4600?

I realise a new paste job would probably fix the specific problem I'm having, but I still want more control over the fan if possible, as that would be very helpful in other scenarios than just movie watching.

download hwinfo64 and create custom fan controls or if you use a unlocked bios you can do that also.

Also a repaste may be in order to help lower the temps.

I already have HWinfo and custom fan profiles, but it wont allow me to pick anywhere inbetween the three settings i mentioned. 0rpm, 2000rpm and 4600rpm, do I need an unlocked BIOS for that?

And yes as I mentioned I imagine a new paste job would fix this specific movie watching problem, but it still doesnt give me any other option than dead silent or vacuumcleaner-mode, which I would really like.

This is the exact message HWinfo gives me when I try another number:

Reset hwinfo64, and change how the temperature sensor to read. Then you can adjust the fans as you want.

Please elaborate, what do you mean by resetting and changing how the sensor reads?

I'm not very good in English  apologize.
In settings you can reset the adjustments in hwinfo(Not configure sensors). When you start hwinfo again you can choose which sensor you shall use. You have two options on how the sensors to be read. You just have to try some. I use google translate, so it's not so easy to explain something better. Sorry.
If you ask Mr Fox, he can explain it better than me he speaks English.

Well actually it's not all perfect.

Apparently "Fan 1&2" only means "Fan 1", just had a crash after my GPU reached 99C because the fan wasnt spinning.. Guess im back to vacuum cleaner mode.

It is sad that Dell can not make a better fan profile in the bios. It does not look like they will try to fix this problem. :nah: Maybe consider and apply new thermal grease? I use Liquid Ultra and have low temperature. Fans do not start as frequently . Cooling paste from Dell is the not particularly good, so heat issues going and get worse as time goes on. And the fans going and start on high and low speed more frequently. If you modify one Cooler Master Notepal U3 that I use, I think the fans in your laptop going to not start so often. They will surely not change so much on the go.
