    Hi all!

I picked up an out of warranty AW 17 with the 120hz panel on ebay that works perfectly. It has a 4930MX, which I have overclocked to 4.0ghz using Dell's built-in BIOS overclocking.

However, the CPU fan is a bit noisy, so I'm looking into replacing that which led me to a question I was hoping you all could help me with.

I know all of the Haswell chips run hot, but I'm wondering if there would be a temp difference between the 4930MX and the 4910MQ, all things equal? I'm not trying to set any OC records or anything and would be perfectly happy with a 4910MQ speed if it was cooler than the 4930MX, allowing the fans to run less.

I know the TDP of the 4930MX is 10 watts higher than the 4910MQ, but is that at max speeds only?

    Can anyone help?

First of all, you should monitor your temperature, hwinfo64, run some tests prime95 3dmarks and make some pictures, post them here, repaste using CLU, is the best thermalpaste and it will help you reduce the temps a bit, you can also undervolt a bit your procesor, and HOW NOW I found ou the dell oc bios is , try to use only XTU.

My 4930MX rarely spins up the fans, at 4.3GHz, with IC Diamond thermal paste, doing normal tasks. My system is silent. I'd be willing to record it. You just need to do a good re-paste and it should mask any issues. Also, use XTU to adjust the voltage and clocks. It helps a lot. ;)

The 4910MQ and 4930MX are the same at stock clocks, temperature wise. The 4930MX will be hotter when it's clocked higher.

TDP is a specification for manufacturers to provide a cooling solution, it's not how much power the CPU can use and how much you use will depend on type of work load and what voltage and frequency you are using.

I did do an IC7 re paste and that helped a few degrees. What do you have XTU set at for your 4930mx?

Which bios are you using? I'm also a little confused on the interaction between dells bios over cocking and XTU. There are so many settings that I'm kind of overwhelmed.

I tried to follow that thread and I end up with so much overheating that the computer shuts down when running wprime stability with 8 threads. I'm also not looking for a maximum overclock, which why I was hoping for some simple guidance :)

Yes, the new Alienware machines BIOS is locked and completely broken and AW thinks that ramping up voltages is equal for all processors, Imho people here use XTU & disable that stupid OC from Dell in our new lineup.

OK, so reset BIOS to default and go with XTU. Does anybody have any suggestions for XTU settings for a cool-running chip, as opposed to extremely overclocked, that they'd care to share?

I think I found part of my problem. I checked the cpu and gpu fans and both are very low CFM units. CPU says 1.66CFM and GPU is 1.74CFM. Guess I'll head to eBay and get some better fans :(

Follow Mr Fox's guide OP and J.Dre post a screenshot of your XTU settings to serve as a guide. I have found that the best way to OC more is

    1. Keep the bottom of the laptop of the ground. Get a Notepal U3 and I've ordered one
    2. Use IC Diamond.. Or Gelid GC Extreme.. Just don't use MX-4..
    3. These Alienware clog up with dust.. Cleaned mine out properly after 6 months and god was so dusty!
    4. Use XTU and the first thing I do is mess around with the turbo powers.. my normal is 50W and max short turbo is 60W... Mess with voltages later..

I know the AW M18x heatsink for xm CPU has 3 pipes, the normal Heatsink only 2 pipes.
Is it the the same by AW17 4930mx / 4940mx CPU Heatsink for better cooling?

No you have only 2 pipes for the M17x... To OC, you need to use Liquid Ultra and raise the bottom of the laptop...
