Long story short, I was testing my aw 17 with the 1070 in it to get the mxm lovers of the world more info on the 1070 upgrade. I tried setting the bios to legacy boot (totally stupid idea I know but i didn't realize there was no bios reset on the AW17)... and bam, bricked the laptop. Spent the last few hours troubleshooting and testing.
    I have now tried,
Booting with 4700mq to reset the laptop. ~ Didnt work.
Booting with no ram until reboot ~ still hasn't rebooted after what I feel is about 20 mins...
I don't have another Nvidia GPU to test it. as I sold my m18x with both my 770ms :(

Anyone else want to weigh in some ideas?

Got it to boot! I threw in a 675m I had lying around and even with the 120hz display it actually posted! So I learned 2 things today! Legacy cards are backward compatible and if I disable uefi by being an idiot I can still boot from a legacy card to get into bios and fix my stupidity! Lol.

OK so problems went from bad to worse. I am still running the i7 4700 since I got the machine back running. Now my issue is more strange. The computer booted, ran most of a 3dmark firestrike run and then powered off at the cpu/gpu together test. Now when I power it back on it runs for about a minute to a minute and a half and shuts down. I tried resetting the bios to defaults and all the did was enable the machine to attempt to boot from my network card. It didn't even reset my hard drive settings back from raid to ahci. I am now seeing why people curse the bios in the aw18/aw17 first gens so much.
I will try the 4930mx again before bed as the only thing I can think is the 2133 mhz ram isn't stable on the 4700 cpu memory controller.

Are you trying to overclock or just get the laptop stable? The 1070 upgrade looks interesting. I actually bought another 17r1 just to throw a 1070 into it but seeing as you are having as much trouble as you are its probably no where near ready. The 17 is a big hassle to reset cmos. I usually take out cpu ram and cmos as well as video card and power cycle. Its not perfect but the 17 was awesome. I upgraded to a clevo after there seemed to be no hope for my beloved 17 getting an upgrade past 980m but the build quality of it is awful compared to the 17r1 so i bought another one and will probably sell my 775dmg3. What we need is vbios support i think. My 17 is 120hz as well and i may buy a 1070 and join you in the effort.

I'm just attempting to regain stability. I think I found my issues with the 1070 but now that I can't maintain stability I can't really test it. I'm 99% sure the throttling and crashes are bios power limit related. After @thegh0sts was talking about his 17 capping at 240w I ran my benchmarks with my UPS display and when the 4700 was working it was drawing almost exactly 200w with everything at stock. My 4930mx at 3.9 or 4 ghz would totally be putting me over the 240w barrier. And it seems alienware knew we would test the limits as even with the 330w psu it still seems to be capping at 240w. That's why I'm not getting a hard crash but rather a "soft crash" that acts like a driver crash.
Problem now is I can't keep my laptop on to test further. Hopefully it's just cpu related.

so you think its a power limit issue? like the mb cant handle it? I never ran into that. The 980m always worked in my 17. Have you tried downclocking the 1070 and dropping the voltage? Try dropping the clocks by 20% or 30% and if you have a watt meter that plugs into the way it can give you an idea of the draw that is more accurate than software. Amazon has them for 15 bucks
