@woodzstack, i was sent over from mogrules from reddit. I would like to upgrade my Alienware 17r1 from an 880m to a 970m 6gb, but i have a few questions. One, would i need to put thermal pads in it. Two, would i have to upgrade power brick. I don’t know the wattage but I think it’s 180W. Three, is the 60hz screen fine or not. If you could help, this would be great. Thank you.

970M can run with a 180W brick, 60HZ screen should be fine (unless you plan to do SLI) and yes ofc you need new thermal pads. However, the performance increase wouldn't really be worth it vs a 980M

I would suggest going 980M at least, if you have a decent 880M that runs without throttling, 970M wouldn't be worth the performance gain.

60hz screen is fine, and as SSJ was saying, GTX 880M vs GTX 970M is basicially the same performance. Get at least a 980M or a GTX 1060/1070.

970M are cheap. VERY reliable too. For the price of a 980M you could be getting a 1070 so I feel it's a waste for the price. 1060N though is not much more than a 970M in cost, and it's twice as powerful.

OP is wanting to upgrade to a 970M from a 880M (AW 17 R1) and is wondering if he has to replace thermal pads, get a 240w charger instead of 180W, and if it can run off a 60hz screen. Yes No and Yes

    A potential client! lol

Nah just looks like this guy is commissioning a bit of a project. Wants a 970m, though performance increase wouldnt be magical maybe he's looking for reliability and cooler temps compared to the 880m.

Brand new 980Ms are on eBay from China for $328 shipped. They even have a make an offer button. So it's not the same price is 1070 or 1060, it's cheaper.

I would love to find a 1070, or 1060 for $328. I can get WX7100's for that price though
