I just bought i7 3740qm (OEM) off ebay quite cheap and need some help with OC. Before this I had i7 3610, which did not allow any overclocking as far as I know. I am running Windows 8.1 Update if that makes any difference, AW bios version A13. First of all what temps are you guys getting on i7 3740qm under full load and what temps are normal on this cpu when it is overclocked, also what should be idle temps? I will probably buy some Liquid ultra or liquid pro thermal compound to replace currently applied Arctic cooling MX-4 if my temps are too high. I get 49C idle temps and 84C was the highest I saw when stress testing using Intel Extreme Tuning Utility. In the manual tuning tab there everything is locked down except reference clock.

    Those temperatures are fine.

You can only overclock it +200MHz. 3.7GHz would turn into 3.9Ghz.

Thanks. I just unlocked all the options in Intel tool by enabling overclocking in BIOS. Do you mean I can safely overclock by only +200Mhz before hitting uncomfortable temps? My multipliers are now set to 39, 38, 37, 37 (from 37, 36, 35, 35) and I noticed that max turbo boost power and short boost power went from 55w and 68w to 45w and 55w. Should I change them back to 55w and 68w?

The 3740QM is a locked CPU. You can only overclock 200MHz because that's all it will support. You can technically try more, but it may not boot or may crash during use. It's not worth overclocking beyond that. The performance gain is not going to be noticeable.
