How is the Alienware M17x screen and it's quality compared to the 72%/95% gamut Sager/Clevo screens?

I would love to see a side by side comparison with the 3 panels.
Or same background so we get an impression of the differences.

My brother has an Asus with the 95% NTSC color gamut screen upgrade. I'll take side-by-side shots of it and my M17x tomorrow. I can tell his screen's colors are much more vibrant, but it can look oversaturated sometimes. And that's with a matte screen.

Sounds good! I'd like to see that, but on my crappy screen it wouldn't make as much sense! :p So I'd like your opinions as well... :)

The 3D one is very good. Colour reproduction is good. The 60Hz one should be the same as the ones from Clevo/Sager but not as good as the 95% ones.

How does the 120Hz screen help any? Methinks it to be just a gimmick... Besides that, I DO care how much of the sRGB range the screen can display, and thus the % NTSC Gamut associated with the screen, which in the case of Dell/Alienware M17x 17.3" 1080p screen in the latest revised model would be... ?

I'm assuming we are talking about the R3/R4? The 1080p screen is decent, nothing special, and no way does it compare to the R2's RGBLED WUXGA panel.

Argh, I can't make a good comparison on my digital camera. My M17x's screen shows up good, but the 95% NTSC screen doesn't. I'll just say that I prefer the 95% screen. The colors are really deep and pleasing. In Anandtech's review of the R3, they got 71% AdobeRGB. Apparently, 100% AdobeRGB ~ 94% NTSC, so the R3/R4 only has about 67% of the NTSC color gamut.

    I demand pictures!
It would be totally awesome if Dell expanded their customization option in this aspect.
Let the buyers choose a 95% NTSC screen (3D and none 3D).

My phone shows them a little better, but it's still not accurate. Here's a shot at it. M17x on the left.

Notice the brighter red in the third row and column on the 95% screen. The difference should be like that for most of the other colors. For some reason, the greys at the bottom showed up blue on my phone for the M17x. The 95% screen's pinks are...really pink.

That is a big difference indeed for some colors.
Others "look" almost exactly the same, thanks for the pics ;)
Online petition for more customization options from Dell? :D

I can't see a difference in the pics but generaly I think 95% gamut look much too oversaturated.

Which reminds me, nVidia vs AMD is also to be considered.
If the Asus is using a nVidia and the M17x a 7970m that could make the comparison more inconclusive.

IIRC AMD have a better color re-production than nVidia's over saturation.
Nevertheless I like the nVidia more, as I tend to go with more vibrancy.

You can get a Spyder 3 Pro and calibrate the colors, makes a HUGE difference for high color gamut screens.

    Hi guys,

Just to come back to this, a few questions:
    1. As Prasad asked, is there any indication of the % NTSC gamut that the screen in the M17x R4 (and also the M17x R3) has? I am interested in using my next dekstop replacement notebook for photo and video editing and a high color gamut (even just full sRGB) would be a nice asset.

    2. From the review at notebookcheck I saw they complain a lot about reflections on the screen. How bad is it in general situations?
Bear in mind that I do not plan to go outside with my laptop. Its purely a Desktop replacement and might move around in the house. I presume light from behind the user is a no-no....but what about lights from above in the ceiling etc?

And yes I plan to use a screen color calibrator with my next notebook..in case someone might suggest it :)

    Thanks for answering!

I think I've read somewhere that the R4 screen is 72% gamut.
