High guys, I recently bought an m17x-R2 (details in Sig), and I'm not sure if I am going to keep it.
I've already put the call in for a return, and am awaiting a call back from Dell, there was a CF hardware problem, as I continuously got screen rolls when I tried to play any game in CF mode.
Now I good have it repaired and keep it, but I was a little disappointed in the performance at high / ultra settings I was getting for SC2. My question is, should my rig be able to run SC2 at these settings without any problems, or am I kidding myself.
I don't need to have a Laptop, but I really wanted one so that I could have a more portable desktop and a beastly (sexy) machine, but it isn't worth it if I can do better with a fixed desktop upgrade.
Currently, SC2 is not playable unless I play it with Medium settings, and yep, I have updated to the latest Dell patch, and flashed the VBios, and I have tried the ATI drivers. Any answers would be great.

I run the game at 1920x1200 with textures on Ultra and everything else on High and the game runs beautifully...and this is with CF disabled. I can't run CF without problems either. : (
I'm also running less CPU that you, a i7-720. And only 4 GB of RAM. -
A HD5770 desktop GPU can run SC2 at ultra settings @ 1080p.... and CF HD5870m is close to spitting range of a HD5850 desktop GPU... Do you have throttlestop from unclewebb@nbr isntalled and configured? Your i7 920XM *might* be throttling, especially if overclocked. That's all I can really think of. My M11rR2 handles SC2 at all med settings at 1080p around 30fps avg, low as 15 in 3v3 comp stops.

Maybe I have a throttling issue, but I don't think so. The system is completely stock except for the Vbios update and driver.
It could be that I actually have a faulty GFX / Mobo, considering that I have problems with the screen rolling upwards in CF in WoW, SC2, and DAO.
Good to hear that this rig should be able to mix it, my desktop is an e6700 with a 320mb 8800GTS and it canes SC2, it just takes a while to load into the game state.
I couldn't believe how bad my AW ran in comparison to my Desktop rig which only has 2GB Ram also.
Thanks for this guys, tech is on the way, and lets hope I see a performance increase, otherwise, this was a waste of ~ $5k. -
maybe I had a similar issue I dont know... my lappy was lame in fps in WOW and cs source. Cant run close to max settings. Mine is going back tomorrow !

Try this at your own risk. Go to your WoW folder and look for your Config file. Open it with notepad and add this line SET gxApi "d3d11" ,then hit save , right click the file and set it to read only. now load up the game and make sure you have shadows on ultra , on lower was giving me some weird shadows but the minute i added ultra my fps went way up and the game looked amazing. The only thing i lowered was water to high, it was the only setting lowering my fps.
Edit: The file name is Config.WTeeF(without the ee) . this forums sensors those three letters and for some reason wow uses that file extension lol. Also the reason why you set the file to read only is so when you launch warcraft it doesnt reset your changes.
Now for the SC2 thing , i have yet to install that one , but i did install GTA4 which is heavy on pc settings. Ran it on high settings and received horrible lag. I Updated my 5870's to 10.12 drivers, updated my system bios to A09 (Tutorial stickied in this forum) and googled i7 940xm parked cores for another tutorial from this site showing how to unlock them. After that i ran GTA4 and pushed it all up to high settings and receiving higher fps with no lag. Again , do these at your own risk. -
SC2 should run perfect for you at all ultra settings. : / I always run it at max settings and usually get 60 fps unless a large battle is going on then maybe it drops down to 45. I'm on the latest of all drivers and most games run great for me. How are your temps and what clocks are the GPUs at? I had problems before with the GPUs over heating and I had to turn SC2 down to medium in order for it to run well while this was happening. Mine was just dusty but you could have a problem with the GPUs cooling.

Tech is replacing the Mobo and both vid cards as we speak. -
It's a real shame, because I really love the thing, but i can't justify the expense if I could spend 1/3 of the price on a desktop and know it will blow it out of the water.
All I want is the modern games to run no problems... I just can't work out if they should, or as Ash had put in his ATI Sc2 thread, they are working fine, and my expectation is wrong. -
You should be able to run SC2 at maxed out settings on the highest resolution with your rig, flawlessly.
What FPS are we talking about, have you tried FRAPS to see what numbers you get?
Maybe run a benchmark to see if something really strange is going on, you should be able to see that in your score.
