The 11.4 CFM is the GPU fan and the 6.4 CFM is the CPU fan. The fans are not the same size/shape so they are not interchangeable.

ah, thinking of the 10.4 CFM fan.

anyway, i am waiting for the fans to arrive and i am not sure which screw post i need to chop off for the CPU fan....maybe i could cut and reglue into a new position?

    the part # i ordered is XN0G5.

The M14X fan should have one screw hole that lines up correctly IIRC. You should be fine cutting the other two off and just leaving it attached with one as long as it aligns with the CPU heatsink. Please post some pics and some before and after temps if you can, I'm very interested in upgrading to that fan.

The CPU fan cavity in the R1 has a bit of floor that should be enough to use some double sided tape. The cpu fan hasn't shipped yet but the GPU has and I'll get back on that when it arrives.

Still waiting on my display cable for the 120hz panel.

I believe he is talking about the m17x r3 cpu fan that trabant Dave was saying he has a 6.5 cfm version. I was also asking about this because all I can find is the 2.3 cfm version. Yeah if someone could let us know if atleast one screw hole from the m14x r2 lines up in the r5, then I would definitely get that fan. I bought the m17x r3 fans but the 2.3 cfm version doesn't seem do much more than the stock fan

my CPU hasn't shipped yet while the GPU fan has shipped and i am just waiting for it. the current GPU fan i have which is also a non-stock fan is only 3CFM and i don't see much of a change over < 2CFM stock fan. the GPU fan should be a simple straight swap. will have to check what i need to cut off the CPU fan to get it to fit.

I swapped the gpu fan with the m17x r3 thpdj 11cfm fan and it it a perfect fit. The fan cable is a little tricky because the cable is short but it does fit. Big improvement. But the 2.3 cfm m17x r3 is a pointless upgrade. Will try the m14x r2 fan after hearing how it goes for you gh0st

i think others like @j95 have done the mod.

EDIT: I am hoping the higher CFM fans will help with temps with a 120Hz panel.

EDIT 2: got notification that the CPU fan has shipped so will see how i can get it to fit once it arrives. probably won't come till some time in august.

The R3 CPU fan is definitely 2.3cfm, rather than 6.5cfm. The 6.5cfm version is Dell XPS M1530 fan.

Just picked up the THPDJ fan for my 17 R1. It's identical to the 1.74 cfm oem fan, one of them just has a typo in the description being 1.74 cfm vs 11.4. Same voltage, same amps, same fins = same cfm. Oh well, got a spare fan now so no fear running it at 100% while gaming.

Yep. Both fans feel like they out out less cfm than the cpu fan.

Just wanted to confirm I got a legit fan and not an R1 fan with the R3 stickers on it. Old left, new right. Not seeing how it can supposedly push almost 7x the air with the exact same design.

I figured rpm was part of it, but isn't flow vs rpm pretty much linear? They must barely be spinning the fan in the r1.

The R1 I believe tops at 3200 rpm which is super low. Nonetheless you are correct assuming the R3 runs the fan at 5500/6000 rpm you should expect double the cfm max

Thanks gentlemen...Gpu was running a bit on the hot side. Ordered THPDJ for my Alw 17 R1. Was gonna order from ebay...But as one of guys said that they seem to pull the bait n switch scheme on EBAY so I chose to order from dell. Dell parts sold it for 13.99 plus tax and luckily I got 2 business day free shipping. So It only came out to $15.20. If you're on the fence about doing this simple update don't wanna spend a lot and want the proper part try dell first. Thanks once again. This 980m is getting some CLu and a new fan to keep it from blowing up.

I had ordered a few parts from Dell, needed for my upgrades - YP26V - Triple pipe heatsink for GPU, THP0DJ- M17x R4 GPU Fan, GVXH3- M17x R3 CPU Fan for few $ only much better than ebay and aliexpress ;)

    Yes !!
But I'm deciding between 780M / 980M only because of the Issues with the legacy BIOS and my beloved Win7 with the maxwell. I'm using the 60Hz. Been a long time since I've read about the maxwell + ranger threads, does the GPU throttle without optimus ? (Win8.1.1)

Thinking about the 120Hz too, should have asked dell today, will do that soon..

i had win 8.1.1 and i had no throttling in any games or benchmarking software on my 980M even with the latest drivers. i bet that in 3DMark 11 it'll score about 10k-11k at stock and a bit over 11k overclocked.

You can also exclusively run the 980M in dedicated mode without issues with the 60hz panel and i suggest you do that if you cannot be bothered installing the intel gpu drivers.

    Thanks !!
By any chance can I dual boot with Win7 ?
Next on my list is 980M then...But I'll have to wait for 2016 Q1, exams will be done by this year end and make myself prepared for using the UEFI.

EDIT: I didn't read the whole thread on WinX destroying the LCDs but are you running that safely ?

I haven't tried but the last i checked win 7 can only be run using optimus only with the 980M and if you're laptop has been set to do dedicated mode then it ain't gonna work.

ever tried running win 7 in VM?

downgrading to the 780M won't give you issues but you will lose in performance.

Nope didn't try with VM + 7, I will consider my options and get acquainted with Win8 and WinX stuff (can't run every game on optimus, it just sucks. UEFI is needed this time around for maxwell ) calculate the budget and procced with (120Hz & 780M or 980M) :D

well win 10 is free for now (duh) and the latest build you can just punch in your win 7 or 8.1 key and i'll activate without needing to go through the labourious upgrade process.

most of the 780Ms on ebay are going between $350-$900+ CAD and ranging from new to used with some questionable quality. you might see if dell has this and how much.

the 980M is about $850 CAD for me and getting it from woodzstack was good.

the panel was about $130CAD from laptopscreen.com

the cable was the tricky bit. i tried dell and they had zero stock so i went to a merchant on amazon that had it and yes it was about $30 USD but it was worth it.

    UPDATE :

Got my 3pipe heatsink, a thin top side thermal pad is a bit chewed off, gotta use my existing one for that particular small piece or I'll get fujipoly if needed...
GPU Fan M17x R3 THPDJ arrived @11.4CFM but the GVXH3 is still 2.3CFM unlike the 6.xCFM (I think there's no 6.5CFM version of this, since I got this from Dell & another user was saying the same), I forgot what's the existing CFM for the Ranger CPU fan, If it's <2 then I'll replace the one.

    EDIT : Part no - DC2800099F0 - GVHX3

@Ashtrix, my best piece o advice would be to stay clear of Windows 10 and stick with 8.1 if you get the 980M... Also stay in Optimus mode... With a 60Hz display you never know what could happen..

Hi I have been reading this thread but I am completely confused I wanna give my AW17R1 a complete cooling upgrade. Which fan's have you put in ? I need a better CPU fan and a GPU fan, I hope to not have to mod the fans so just put in and go :) Can anyone help me with that ?

    GPU = 0THPDJ - Requires no modding.
CPU = 0XN0G5 - Requires modding (all mounting posts need to be removed and some of the screw holes)

there's another CPU fan that's a lower CFM but requires no modding.

EDIT: I bought the above fans and did the mod for the CPU fan. then i lined the outside wall with some foam sheet from a craft store and it keeps it in place, no need to create new mounting posts plus it slides out with enough force.

Omg m8 your amazing. Found the CPU fan on a marketplace here for 10$ gonna buy it and report back to you. What are your results ? :)

    EDIT
Did what you did.. Cut off the fanholder legs. Put some foamsheet to stuck it in with and got a cooling that drops me 10'c. So it doesnt get hotter then 83'c and idles 47-48 <3

Okay so I bought an second hand M14x R2 fan from my local second hand page and it works like a charm. I am now looking online for a cheap new CPU upgrade fan but I cannot find it. I have been on aliexpress looking for the THPDJ but I don't know which one to order. I am affraid that I will get a part that is exactly the same.

4.1 GHz on all cores, with the stock fan temps would rise immediately to 101c under test. Now it doesn't reach 91c.

Can you do me a favor when you have a minute? Can you measure length, width and height on that fan and let me know the dimensions? I might want one for another project, but need to know the dimensions to determine whether or not it will fit where I want to try using it. - Thanks -

That's an M14x R2 Fan you'll need to dremmel those bits to fix plus need padding too for the bottom part

here's the thread on T|I for more detailed breakdown on how to install (M17x R4, should be same for the Ranger)

I was upgraded the i7 4710mq to i7 4940mx 3.1ghz>>4.4ghz and then my alienware 17 r1 got overheat with the new cpu. I realized that my cpu fan is too weak to handle the new cpu. So I did a lot of research, and I found out that the alienware m14x r2 fan will work with alienware m17x r4 and 17 r1( m17x r5). But i go to ebay and i search for that fan and they sell it for 29usd. I don't want to spend 29usd for that fan. So I was looking for other fan. And I decided to try the alienware 14 r1 ( m14x r3). The fan of the alienware 14 r1( m14x r3) was bigger than my alienware 17 r1( m17x r5)fan and alienware m14x r2 fan.( alienware 14 r1(m14x r3 fan > alienware 17 r1(m17x r5) fan > alienware m14x r2 fan.) I decided to use the bench grinder to grind all around of the alienware 14 r1(m14x r3) fan off to fit exactly the size of my alienware 17 r1 fan slot. It was very tight and i didn't need anything to hold it. I tested the alienware 14 r1(m14x r3) fan in my alienware 17 r1(m17x r5), and you know what the alienware 14 r1 (m14x r3) fan was 2 times powerful than my alienware 17 r1 fan. My laptop was 4C degree cooler in overlocking idle, and 15C degree cooler in full load stress test.( intel tuning utility).

Hi guys, this thread has been quiet for quite some time now but I've been heavily invested with my Alienware 17 ranger and I've managed to successfully increase the GPU fan speed of my laptop. I've done the upgrade for both the modded CPU fan XN0G5, and the perfect fit GPU fan THPDJ. I noticed that even if I replaced both fans, they are still restricted by our unit's BIOS making it lose its potential to run at higher speeds.

I researched on PWM hard mod thru various forums and videos on the net. What I did was to remove the connectors of the 2 in the middle. I had to be careful in removing both connectors from its plastic clips using tweezers.

Then the moment of truth came when I had to test and boot my laptop. Its either I screw something up in my motherboard or I'll be successful in maxing out my fan speed. As soon as it turned on,the GPU fan was blowing really fast, faster than when I forced to run it through its max 3400 rpm through HWINFO before without the mod. It now has a sharper sound and I can feel more air blowing. I believe that it's running at 11.4 CFM.

I'm using a Radeon R9 m290x repasted with ic diamond. When I play nba 2k17, I used to get a max temp of 86 degrees Celsius. With this mod, I played the game again and I was able to decrease the temps to 76 degrees Celsius.

Not bad at all. I plan to do the same with my XN0G5 CPU fan soon and I'd be happy to share my findings.

Here are pictures of my results:
