I'm having issues that have only *very* recently arisen with the USB on my Alienware 17 running Win 8. It detects NO USB devices. Zero. Zilch. No external drives or input devices work.
I've tried uninstalling the "Intel(R) USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller - 0100 (Microsoft)" through the Device Manager, but it sits at the "Uninstalling devices..." phase and never progresses anywhere. The Cancel button is non-selectable, and the close button doesn't do anything. Checking it for updates is inconclusive, and disabling/reenabling it again makes Device Manager freeze.
Also oddly enough, the computer refuses to restart or shut down properly. It will stay at the "Shutting down..." and "Restarting..." screen endlessly. In order to fully shut down the computer, I have to hold the power button. This screwed up an attempted BIOS/UEFI reinstall, but what else was I supposed to do after leaving the damn thing to "restart" overnight for like 9 hours?
System Restore (by booting up into Win8 installation disc; it gets stuck if I try to do it from inside the OS) is literally the only option that works, and only temporarily at that; after a while it goes back to being a derp as described above.
Has anyone else run into this problem before?

From what I understand, Windows 8 has its own drivers already installed (after installation) for USB devices and you do not need to worry about it.

I'm running Windows 8.1 on my AW 17 - it it's been running fine.
Have you tried using the "recovery" features in Windows 8? A "refresh" might repair any corrupt drivers - you should also verify you have the correct drivers installed from the Dell website. -

I haven't had these problems - so haven't needed to do a refresh.
Though, if the refresh doesn't work - a clean install is your next option - and if that doesn't solve the problem - then it may be in the hardware... -
hi!
how did you fix your gpu problem?
i also have that problem my alienware 17 cant detect nvidia. im currently using it by hibernation because if i shutdown it nvdia will be missing but i can enable it by doing a couple of disabling and enabling nvidia gtx 770m.

AW17 W8: USB not working, drivers won't uninstall, computer can't shut down, sys restore from OS disk is only solution, but temp.
