I just picked up an AW17, it has the issue of blurred horizontal lines flickering across the screen, different colors seem to make it flicker differently and complete solid colors it will show fine with some flickering.

I did the Dell LCD test, which showed fine, but solid colors don't make it freak out, as previously stated.

I've unseated the GPU twice and reinserted it (765M), repasted the GPU, disassembled and reconnected the LCD connectors so far and it seemed to behave very erratically after disconnecting and reconnecting the LCD cables, but it quickly returned to it's "Normal".

Swapping from Optimus to dedicated doesn't change it, but it displays perfectly when connected to an external monitor.

Okay, so after refusing to give up and nearly a full disassembly to reconnect LCD connectors I've finally gotten somewhere.

Windows upon loading does something to upset the screen, putting it to sleep after Windows has started, then waking it back up makes the screen display perfectly normal. I've heard of the reverse of this, but not this. Googling is failing to find me any results either.

Any ideas as to what's happening here?

Messing with it more, I've installed a working 860M out of my AW18.

Edit: It's back to it's old habits, here's a video showing exactly what it's doing

Try a clean Windows 7 install (on a spare disk) and install an old driver. Also see whether running 'Basic VGA' makes a difference. If the behaviour is still the same then it's time to try out a new LCD cable.

I thought, since I have an AW17 and AW18, and the connectors are identical, that I'd just throw an AW18 screen delicately on it. It literally melted the small cable with the white connector in half in a few seconds, hopefully someone will see this before they try it.

However, upon reassembly of the AW17, now it's correctly displaying again temporarily with flickers. So since the only change I made was disconnecting the LCD, I'm going to get a new LCD cable and possibly screen, since now I'll have to order an AW18 cable(Hopefully the only damage)

Edit: Upon disassembly, the wire that melted is to the LED lights on the lid and the webcam, I must've somehow pinched it. Sadly for me the only one I can find is with the connector board, ohwell. Might not be a bad idea to replace it too since this happened.

@t456 do you happen to know if the newer Alienware 17 screens will work? Like the 4k screen, or any of their 1080 screens?

Which panel do you have now?

Look at the sticker on the back; software can't be relied upon with Dell systems (they overwrite the panel's identification strings).

I can pull it apart if you like and post back when I do, but I know it's the 1600x900 LVDS display, which is why I want to be rid of it.

    EDIT:
