Hi Power Rangers. Im also having trouble with a new (to me) msi 1070 card.
I was trying to flash a few different vbios roms from techpowerup to try and get around this throttle issue, but the last one (Nvidia 86.04.67.00.1E) killed it and I get 8 beeps on POST.
I have to spi reflash with something else...but.....anyone with experience know why this is throttling? Performance cap reason switched between PWR-VREL-IDLE....I have 330w power brick.
    Thank you :)

Most likely wrong vbios. I would only recommend MSI vbios. Majority of vbios from other vendor has different power requirement, less or more can hurt the card.

330w AC adapter doesn't matter much, machine can't accept more than 115w anyways.

    @Rengsey R. H. Jr.
I may have killed it already...I got flash to work and flashed msi rom from techpowerup
But now the card is not seen in BIOS...says not detected in dedicated graphics :(

sorry to bother...but could you point me to a msi 1070 rom?
    I will try another one

Did you save and chip dump with the original firmware before flashing? If so, try putting it back on.

Nope...first read was just garbage. I think I killed it with nvflash

    Definite maybe.

Lets see...while waiting for my spi flasher I was altering the N173HHE-G32 screen, putting new backing material and then...I stuffed up..I broke the edp cable. I couldnt repair it so I ordered a new one and still waiting for it. In mean time i have 60hz lvds panel installed.

I then got the flasher and worked it all out. It looks like it flashed!!....but...

I didnt realise the 1070 needs edp to start...wont play with lvds....so I put card into the pc and it wouldnt even show up in BIOS.
I will know if everything is ok once i have the new edp cable :)

Oh ok sounds like progress. What VBIOS did you flash? I have a 1070M from a Zotac but never knew what flash was on it. If you let me know the utilities and method I can dump the VBIOS for you.

You can still use the GTX 1070 in LVDS.

Go into bios (if its unlocked) and changed it to , dame whats the other mode besides PEG ? lol ..it should work in the meantime till you get your EDP cable.

    Oh I hope your wrong
I changed video configuration in BIOS to SG, PCI...all of the options basically...
Main BIOS page says dedicated graphics not detected, with 1070 installed.

    So... :(

1070 should work via SG mode to the best of my knowledge.

You will need to set it into SG mode first however.

I wouldnt use nvflash to work with the 1070, especially if the vBIOS you pulled from it was garbage. Should stick to known working vBIOS.

I could probably get the one off of my AW 13 R3, but its for an MSI 1070.

I believe he has the MSI card so it could work.

How do you flash a card that isn't being detected though?

The only way you should flash, with a programmer.

You can flash signed vbios but it's unlikely to work. Striker was incredibly daring to flash his zotac card with the msi bios but luckily it worked out and set the precedent for future upgrades.

    It is an MSI 1070
I got the vbios from techpowerup and it looks like SPI flasher worked..it verified as same in buffer (or whatever the message is).
But still nothing in laptop BIOS....(yes I set SG mode with 980 card in computer then shutdown and installed 1070)

@TheReciever yes please if you get a moment to spare..pull your msi rom, post here and I will sing you praises and grovel at your feet if it works ;)

    yeah....not sellers fault

When i first installed it I couldnt get gpu-z or nvidia inspector to read anything from vbios...I assumed (wrongly) that it needed a different vbios. So i used nvflash to put a new rom and then had throttling issues. I was trying different roms to fix it and thats when I broke it I think (2nd mistake)

    so....lesson learnt
Now i have spi flasher but no msi roms I have seems to fix it.

Maybe now I can bake the little ...card :p

I think I set tdp to 120w, but sadly the ec chokes and throttles the card.

Might be good for tuning the card up to the 115w limit though, as I was able to take the number 1 spot on 3dmark for the ranger platform.

    Ok
I spi flashed @TheReciever 's stock vbios and installed 1070 to laptop, still nothing in PC BIOS.

So I tested the card in the pc. 15v power rail present (I assume 15v is right?!?..no schematics here)
I pulled card and checked what traces I could follow, then got my bench power supply and tried to give it some juice. Wouldnt accept any amps so nothing is shorted to ground as far as I can see. Nothing getting hot.

my only hope left is everybody is wrong and it definitely does need an edp connection to power up...or the gpu is dead.

Either way I wont spend any more to upgrade this laptop, I will buy a newer one later in the year.

Thank you guys for all your help.....Nvidia necromancy isnt my forte I guess ;)

You got a clear flash result?

and no, the 1070 will boot via SG mode, as its the HD 4600 driving the display at that point

Yes...I used auto on ch341 and it verified the read/write was same.

I killed the gpu chip with nvflash then.....thats kind of a talent o_O

I dont recall using a 1.8v adapter either, just the base programmer.

Couldnt get it to work at all on the host machine with the 1.8v adapter so I just tried it without it.

Its worth noting Im quite ignorant with the programmers and how they work, that being said I didnt use any auto function.

Erase, verify, program, verify. Those were my steps for my 1070.

If he did verify then the programming worked. I would keep the 1.8V adapter into the ZIF socket since that is the proper supply voltage to the chip.

Is there a way for me to dump my VBIOS spi without desolvedering the chip?

    Whatever works :)

I only got the flasher to work with some advice from @Mr. Fox and some trial and error...in any case. I can plug the 1070 in right now and read the rom @TheReciever sent me....verified.

So its not the vbios Im sure. Has power to 1070 when in my ranger...just nothing in pc bios.
    Thank you anyway Gentlemen :)

Yes. In-line SPI read/write operations with one of these. https://www.amazon.com/Ximimark-SOIC8-Socket-Adpter-Programmer/dp/B07BRSVRXV

Is the BIOS set to SG mode? On some Alienware systems you cannot use PEG mode with newer GPUs. And, if my understanding is correct, you cannot use SG mode with some of the Alienware 17-inch systems that run a 120Hz eDP display.

    Hi,

With the 60hz panel attached and the video set for SG have you tried booting to windows? (ignoring what is reported in the system bios). I've recovered 1070's that way after a bad bios flash as they still show up in device manager and can still be flashed with nvflash at this point, even if system bios says nothing detected.

    Javers
