I watched Dell Outlet for several days, and am interested in purchasing a M17x there. I found that CPUs(620, 720, 820) and Video Cards in r2 have much lower scores than those in r3(e.g. 2630), according to the benchmark articles I had googled, while the prices of r2 and r3 are very close. But I prefer r2's style a little. So I wonder if it is worthwhile to purchase a r2 other than r3. In other words, are their performance difference very large?

    I would recommend the R2.

Dual gpu, i7 920-940xm you could buy for 300-450, aluminum chassis, and if your lucky the 1920x1200 resolution rgb led screen.

Check out this benchmark thread and checkout the R2 and R3 differences on benching,

I realize they're all using top of the line parts, but you can also upgrade to those over time if you ever want to.

What if I have no interest in upgrade? Is a low-end configure R2 still worthwhile?

many prefer the R2 because of the chassis and the ability to have dual vid cards.

however, the R2 uses first gen Core i7 processors. The R3 uses second gen i7 sandy bridge processors which perform at a much higher level

The R2 is a tweakers playground but if you have no interest in dual cards, updating bios, upgrading cpus etc...it may make sense to get a powerful R3 and be done with it

Yeah, I agree w/ Slickdude. Besides, fully upgrading the R2 is pretty pricey.
