All along I've had an R1 running.
Its not in the best shape as its a qual build of it (put together from various busted R1's)

    Suffers froms crashes etc.

So I decided to get an R2 as i got a good deal on one. One thing I forgot to check was the screen res and the one I got has a 1440x900 screen whereas the one on my R1 is 1920x1200
Does anyone know if theres any issue with me swapping the screens?
    My R2 has dual 5870's.

You can do that I just checked for myself today even though it was kinda confirmed as I got a R2 also but NOT to replace my R1 :p so go for it.

Zeke, Dell removed the RGB option in the last weeks when one was still able to configure a R2, probably out of stock so if you'll get one from them it won't be new.

Don't forget to do a full system power drain after mounting the screens(removing through conceal CMOS battery etc.)
Doing so your BIOS settings will also turn to their default values so remember to change them back if you need.

As for the RGB panel I just said that it wasn't an option anymore in the last days of the R2 on Dells site so I took a guess that maybe the stock came to an end.

Yea, that is a smart guess I think. It's just that it's clear they leave some inventory for service deals, if you think to it: if they dont got any RGBs left at all, they have to replace the whole system, don't they :)? that would result in a lot bigger loss from business than a screen. also... I know there were a few selling off ebay, though too expensive. OR you can try asking sales rep to sell you one... might work. but yea, best bet is still if something goes wrong with ur new R2 that you would wanna ask a RGB screen replacement to cover moral loss from it :D and yet ridiculous... my previous laptop was a HP, though i hated how hot did palm rest get, sometiems I couldnt even put my hands on it, it burnt :)D...), but in 2 years of daily usage nothing happened to it... get a AW and in a week things start going wrong.... I think it shouldnt happen to $3k-$5k dollar systems

Or they can be refurbished panels or coming from returned/refurbished sysyems.

I have a quick look around but can't seem to find a guide on how to dismantel the screen itself
Reason being i that the screen i swapped from my R1 to the R2 has a slightly greyish surround on the screen, whereas the one on the R2 has a pure black surround which looks better

Ah,ok you're talking about the plexy , well it is glued to the screen (i know... stupid idea) aund the only way to remove it is to cut It and reglue it. But the black bezel on my both m17x are the same black color.

    Ahhh glued. Ok nevermind then.
Mines a grey colour. dark, but not black.
See my R1 was built from busted and quality build machines. so its a mess of parts

So you're talking about the black frame surrounding the screen (where you have the webcam and Alienware light on the lower part). Then yeah that plexy-glass thing is glued ;(
