    Hi everybody,

Recently my Alienware m17x r3 (full specs posted bellow) finally gave up on me. When I plug in the power source it just shuts it off and it doesn't boot up at all. All points to the motherboard failure - though not sure.

I could have fixed it, but have gotten a new laptop instead because I am need something a lot more portable and professional looking. My question is - how can I best monetize my zombie m17x r3? I don't have much experience with this - the thing I was considering were:

    1) Sell for parts on eBay (256gb 840m pro, killer bigfoot, hd6990m, HyperX ram + other -> please let me know what else I could sell)
    2) Sell for parts elsewhere (please suggest where)
    3) Sell the entire system on eBay
    4) Sell the entire system elsewhere (please suggest where)

Please let me know if there is anything else I'm missing and what do you think would be the best way to go about it. Thank you!

    Full specs:

    Processor: Intel Core 2nd Gen i7 2630QM Processor (2.0GHz Turbo Mode 2.8GHz, 6MB Cache)
240GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD (aftermarket upgrade)
320GB 7200 RPM SATA Hard Drive
8 GB DDR3 Kingston HyperX SDRAM 1666MHz (2 DIMMs) (aftermarket upgrade)
    17.3-inch WideFHD1920 x 1080 60Hz WLED
    6X Blu-ray Disc Combo (DVD+/-RW + BD-ROM)
    2 GB GDDR5 AMD Radeon HD 6990M
    Killer Wireless-N 1103 a/g/n 3x3 MIMO for Gaming & Video and Bluetooth 4.0

    Dell Alienware M17x R3 Laptop
    Soft Touch Stealth Black
    9 Cell Battery (dead)
3.0 MP HD Camera with MIC
    125V Power Cord
    240W AC Adapter

There are also sites like part-people.com which you can maybe sell the working parts of your R3 to (LCD screen, keyboard, CPU, etc.).

eBay is good for unloading the used parts, but the potential for people to scam you is much higher there than most other sites. I'd say if you've got the time, you can wait 3 months and get your post count above 100, then you can sell your parts and such in the NBR Marketplace.

I agree wholeheartedly that parting out is your best bet. Takes a little patience, but ram is selling high right now and mxm cards are always good sellers. The screen, power adapter and hard drives will all sell eventually, guaranteed. Then you can still sell the gutted shell for something, since people always need cosmetic parts (just be careful not to crack anything when taking parts out). Sell the upper and lower parts separately to maximize even more.

It may take a month or two, but you will likely get twice as much compared to selling it as-is not working.

radji, ryanlecocq - thanks for the replies!

It seems the best would be to take it apart - I guess ebay then? Or is there other marketplace? - I cannot unfortunately wait 3 months as I will be going abroad for study :(

Two quick follow-ups. What would be your ballpark estimate for the remaining parts? And second - I have never disassembled computer before - do you think that particularly parts like a screen are feasible for me to dis-assemble by myself?

    Thank you!

For time, whole machine on eBay.
    For $$$, parts.

Thank you! I have just couple of months (2) - do you think the parts are feasible or not?

Yup, I believe it's enough time to get what you need.

Thanks appreciate the answer! I was putting a list together of what I could sell. I'm not sure if I will be able to disassemble it properly though (going to watch some videos on YouTube). Here is what I have - do you think it's feasible (or am I missing something):

    - GPU
    - CPU (?)
    - Screen
    - RAM
    - SSD + HDD
    - network card
    - the AC adapter

I may be interested in the whole unit minus the RAM, SSD/HDD, and network card.
