Last night I tried to burn recovery disks using Alien Respawn (the newer re-badged Dell Datasafe Local program) from first boot up and had unusual difficulty doing so. After about 7 attempts (and 7 wasted DVD+R DL disks) I was finally able to complete the burning process. During the failed attempts I would get near the end (verifying process) and it would stop only stating "burning process has failed." Could this be a problem with my DVD drive (HL-DL-ST DVD+-RW GA 31N)?

could be the drive but also could be the media. What brand of media are you using? if its one of the low cost bulk no name brands, then its most likely bad media.

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing but I used the majority of them to save pics and files and such and didn't have any problems doing that on another laptop. They're Memorex DVD+R DL 8.5gb capacity. Funny thing is the Respawn process is 4.91gb and when it reaches 4.90gb the disk fails to complete.

I think this DVD-RW drive is horrible myself. I've burned several dual layer DVDs and had several coasters just as you've described. All the annoying clicks and rattlings makes me think the drive is dying but no it works 90% of the time quietly.

I might give Dell a call one of these days but in no rush since I don't use it much and am planning on converting it to a HDD bay.
