Whats up people? Hope everyone is doing fine!
Now, i have a question for the audience. In fact, i would mostly like to hear the opinions of the Alienware-forum on this subject. Not because i don't like rest, but I've planned this based on Alienware-computers in the first place. Later on, i will expand to other manufacturers, but my current knowledge is strongest based on these systems, so that is how I'm going to start.
So, without writing too much bull here - My teacher just told that i need to do an some form of SQL - Webpage connection-project as an finishing grade for my class, and the first thing that popped into me, would be to do an simple, clean, fast an reliable driver-database for all current components found in the Alienware Mobile segment. (M11,M14,M15x,M17,M18).
Right, an webpage where people could just enter what hardware they're looking for drivers for (+ OS), and then it would display back the driver (With components that it work with, changelogg "if needed", who shared it, etc. information). Without the bull that all the producers provide, just an really simple GUI which is "quick to the point", and also, an fast internal download mirror. I'm fed up with HP's 30 kb/s download speed on a 185mb driver package.
So, i have some major thoughts about the project as for now:
#1 - SIMPLE, CLEAN, GUI (No advertise, no boring "Other functions", this is strictly an "search/find - Download driver" page. Maybe an Paypal-donation button at the bottom to keep the server cost down, although it wouldn't be that big at all. All + money will be donated to charity if it would ever reach that point)
#1 - Abillity to search for drivers by component (GPU, MOBO-BIOS, etc.)(Also abillity to ONLY display WHQL, Official BETA-drivers or "Homebrew" fixed drivers.)
#2 - Abillity to search for drivers by system-name (M11x, m15x, m17x Revision-number etc.) (Also abillity to ONLY display WHQL, Official BETA-drivers or "Homebrew" fixed drivers.)
#3 - Abillity to submit an new driver through simple GUI (Description of driver, name, what component it is for (+ optional system), WHQL, Fix-list etc.) (I would need to approve it, though.)
#4 - Abillity to report, approve, disapprove drivers on individual or system-basis.
#5 - Abillity to notify me of new driver-releases. (Maybe ill do an script which actually does this for me. Who knows, maybe get some contact with the major driver-producers to get them to notify me.)
Now, what i would like next -Is input from you guys. What functions would you like to see from an webpage like this? Is there anything specific that I've missed out? This is loosely the thoughts i have after two minutes of thinking, but I'd love to get some feedback from you guys, as I'm sure there is a load of brilliant thoughts out there.
As for last, i would hope that this thread don't get deleted by the NBR team. This is not marketing at all, this is a free-of-charge service that i think would be positive for everyone, without pulling focus away from NBR.
Please - Share ideas, thoughts, etc.
Thanks!
Edit:
Now, I'm clear of the fact that this would be needed to be updated really frequently, not to became an dead project.
