Hi all, I'm french so, excuse me in advance for my english.
I've just bought an alienware 17 from my brother:
i7-4700MQ / 17,3 WLED HD+ (1600 x 900) / 8Go DDR3L 1600MHz (4Gox2) / 240W / NVIDIA GeForce GTX 880M with 8GB GDDR5
This was a good deal, but as said all over the web, the 900p screen is very bad quality (grainy and poor gamut).
I want to update the screen, I've searched around and find that from Dell there is only 2 others choices:
- 1920 x 1080 / 60 hz matte
or
- 1920 x 1080 / 120 hz 3D glossy
But on laptopscreen.com I've found other screen compatible with the AW 17:
https://www.laptopscreen.com/English/model/Dell/ALIENWARE 17/
Have you some informations about theses (gamut, feedback etc...)? IS all theses screen really compatible with the AW 17?
I'm interested by the 1920 x 1080 / 60 hz glossy (Item ID: 720863) . Because I want the optimus (which is disabled on the 120 hz) and I prefer glossy screen.
Thank you for your help

Hi XGIII ,
There is quite a bit of info available already on this topic in various threads.
Your best bet is to read through http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-17-m17x/758711-120hz-3d-screen-upgrade-alienware-17-a.html If your considering an upgrade. If your not to familiar with laptops and disassembling them then the 120hz screen is probably not a good choice as it requires quite a bit of tear down to replace as well as some hard to find parts ( LCD cable).
The 60hz panel is much easier as it will only require removal of the bezel around the LCD and then removing the LCD itself and swapping the panel out. You said you wanted the switchable graphics? If that is the case then you don't want 120hz as that will not be an option anymore but if you want glossy then you want the 120hz as the 60hz comes in a matte option ( at least the dell one does ). Laptopscreen's does show options for both matte and glossy in both screen types but I don't know if they are the same part number, it might be worth emailing them and asking.
They do show a glossy 60hz option, so maybe you can go that route? If you do let me know how it works and I can add the info the the screen upgrade thread stickied at the top for reference. -
Hi MogRules,
Thank you for your answer.
I've already read the 120Hz 3D Screen upgrade for Alienware 17 and other threads talking about the screen upgrade. But as I said, I'm really interrested by the 60hz glossy option. I will ask laptopscreen for more information and I'll let you know.
Maybe this screen is part number of the m17x r4? I don't know if the m17x r4 and the AW 17 are using the same port ("40 pin LED screen socket").
If there is no other choice, I'll take the 120Hz and maybe I can downclock the 880m when I'm on battery mode. But this will give more autonomy? -
Chances are it is the same screen as the 120hz option just without the 3D and the 120Hz. The glossy on mine is not like the glossy on the R4, it is much less reflective then my R4 was by far. While it is still a glossy screen it still contains many of the principles of a matter screen with the anti reflective properties. It isn't as anti reflective as the fully matte option but the colors and screen quality is phenomenal. Honestly if you can live without the switchable graphics the 120hz is extremely worth it IMO.

Please update the M17x 120hz Display sticky thread with your results. Every opinion counts with something as subjective as screen quality.

I'm only interested by the screen, I think I'll not get the 3D parts (emitter and glasses).
So this is what I need:
New Video Cable ( Dell part number N392W )
New Screen ( laptopscreens.com screen ID 653787 , Dell part number GN3GT *There may also be a 0 in front of the G* )
I just found the cable on ebay but for the screen (ID 653787), paypal is unavailable on laptopscreen.com for now. I've sent a ticket to them.

I'll receive the screen tomorrow, but for the cable their is a problem. The seller still not send it! So, it'll take me more delay to test the new screen and post for my feedback :/ If someone have a link for buying the cable, I'll cancel my actual order.

I bought mine through Aliexpress but that option takes quite a bit of time. The other option is ebay but it is stupid expensive on there. The cable is easily the hardest part of this upgrade to get your hands on -
I've bought this . The seller is from the US so I've though it'll be more reliable (as the positives evaluations on ebay). The order has been done since September 21. He told me last week that there will be a little delay. I've sent him an email since this Saturday 27 for update, still no answer. I'm waiting a little before cancelling the order and ask a refund.

Open a case sooner rather than later with ebay, if he sends it you can drop the case when you get it and it works.
