My fellow alienware enthusiasts first of all it is wonderful to be apart of this community now and I am loving my new laptop! I do have one question.. my cpu 4800mq seems to idle around 50-60c and while I was downloading a few games it jumped to 75-80c and the fan kicked up to a high speed to pull it back down to 50-60c.. the laptop fluctuates a lot within those idle temps and my past g74jw would idle around 40-48c and never jumped to a 75-80c when the pc was just on desktop not really doing anything.. i've ran prime95 and the cpu jumped to 83c and the fan kicked in and was stable for 20mins at 71-73c which is amazing but what concerns me is the idle temps.. so my question is the idle temps 50-60c normal for this 4800mq and has anyone else experienced the random jump to 75-80c while on desktop and/or if anyone has an idea what that could be? I have the laptop on a flat glass desk 48w x 28d x 30h and the laptops rubber mounts on the bottom keep it fairly high for a laptop for air flow.. I've thought about getting a cooler master u3 cooler if the temps are normal and to help bring that down a few degrees and also possibly re apply thermal paste with something everyone recommends highly on here? thankyou everyone for taking your time and reading this long post.. I greatly appreciate your time and advice. :hi2:

Well I ran prime 95 for 20minutes and never got over 73c.. That's perfect to me under stress but I just want to know if the idle temps are normal 50-60c

If the temperatures change rapidly it's not so much a cooling issue as an EC issue, have you got the latest bios?

Yeah I've updated to 08 version for bios was on 05. Is there a way to manual fan control for CPU? I wouldn't mind hearing a slight fab noise to keep the temps down more

You might be able to do so with HWinfo64...

I have the same processor in my 17 and when downloading games or really doing nothing the fan goes up and down every once and a while like the first post described. I don't know how to check my cpu temps or I could let you know what temps mine run at to compare . I have most all latest games and been using it since June of 2013 with no issues what so ever . But do understand what you are saying because my cpu fan behaves similar .

Just open up a custom fan table on HWinfo which will allow the fan to kick in at lower speeds at pre-defined temperatures. I wouldn't let a CPU idle at that high a temp. I keep mine at around 45-50
