I don't need to change the boot menu policy just to install the GPU?
-
-
980M is now installed: no booting issues. now to install the drivers.
EDIT: now winsat.exe is doing its thing.Last edited: Jun 3, 2015 -
hmmm....trying to flash the modded vbios and it's stuck on nvidia display adapters present in system.
-
all i am seeing in cmd is "NVIDIA firmware update utility (version 5.196) simplified version for oem only".
EDIT: decided to try the nvflash here
https://biosmods.wordpress.com/mxm-vbios/
and it flashed....amazing!
unfortunately i got caught up in the fanfare and didn't do a back up

we can share our backup if needed.
Wich vbios you instal on it? -
Svl7. 3Dmark11 scores.
Stock vbios at stock speeds - 9785
Svl7 vbios at stock speeds - 10600 approx.
Svl7 vbios at 1303/1450 - 11300 approx.
Not sure why the scores are low than expected. -

We can say each gpu is 'unic' from the core so results may change between each systems but it can be also having too much app in process or most common from the nvidia driver version.
Wich driver are you using and mod from me, j95 or yourself? -
Under 70 and using the 353.00 hotfix driver with J95's modded files.
Also, I am missing settings in the nvidia control panel.Last edited: Jun 4, 2015 -
If you got time, you can test my driver to see the difference. But my driver give me this score up and i think all settings in nvidia panel.
-
got a link?
-
You can find it at the first page at the end of tuto: ''DRIVER better and OC on: 352.86 file for gtx980m''
-
gave your modded driver a go but got a blank screen at boot.
-
Try 353.06 modded by J95:

I am using this driver and it works fine:

I am using j95's stuff.
-
Great, I am sure you will enjoy your new graphics card a lot.
-
The problem I have is Dragon age inquisition is not running in full screen mode.
-
I don't have that game installed, but in most games Alt+Enter enters the full screen mode if the game launches in a windowed mode. If that does not help, I can't help as I do not have that game installed.
-
Did you allready use the cmd command once?
Enable legacy in Windows 8 (cmd as admin):
bcdedit /set {default} bootmenupolicy legacy
I will give a try with this driver to see the difference. -
hmmm....got my AW17 to run in dedicated mode with the 980M.
will do more testing for throttling and general stablility. -
Hi,i have the 770m,how do i know which kind of heatsink i have?
Sent from my iPhone -
You take off the back panel and it is the very long heatsink. 2 pipes = 770M, 3 pipes = 780M.
If you want to upgrade to the 980M you need a 3 pipes heatsink.avands likes this. -
Tnx dude.do you recomend upgrading it over 770m? The 980m with the heatsync will cost over 900 $. Will my laptop function properly? Does it function as well as a laptop with default installed 980m?
Because i am in iran and there is no dell support in my country i should be sure first.tnx for the help

For me it works fine with win 8.1. I am still testing win 10.

Hackintoshihope AlienMeetsApple
Known issues without of games in windows 8.1. I'm not sure if it is Nvidia or whatever but I also get this issue in final fantasy XIV and other games... If you come up with a fix let me know. I got my 980M newly installed, put in windows 8.1 (from 7) and started having the full screen issues. -

In our case dragon age refuses to open at all in full screen. It seems to be a known issue? Refer to previous post.avands likes this. -

http://www.aliexpress.com/item/NVID...980M-for-16F3-16F4-1762-1763/32294160185.html
i can easily install the hardware, but i am a totall noob in software,so az far az i read the only thing i should do is un install the drivers, change some options in boot menu, mod the driver and flash the vbios
are these the only things i should do? -
Yes, but speak with woodzstack for the 980M. Just send them a PM.avands likes this.

I can't buy items directly from us because of sanctions
so i have to buy it from China because they can send it directly to my adress .

-
Nope, already tried but most of them said its not possible to directly ship to iran. This seller in aliexpress has good feedback, and has a return policy, don't you agree?
Sent from my iPhone -
no wonder. you can give them a try if they're willing to ship to you.

so no luck here have to order from china
but i still have a big question. is it necessary to flash the vbios??? if it is,then why is it needed?because i have no idea how to do that. -
-
I think overclocking the 980m needs a 330w psu? I dont need overcloxking right now.
Still have not decided between 970m or 980m.whith the price difference i could get a ps4 !
Sent from my iPhone -
i have the 980m as i already have a PS4. even if you don't overclock, the unlocked speeds are still decent for the 900m cards.
avands likes this. -
hmm, you don't need to flash to be able to overclock... flashing is just like having a preoverckloed gpu. You can flash or just using software whenever you want to overclock. As your choice but updating drivers, you will need to use modded driver.

Tnx so the only modding to do after hardware installation, beside changing some settings is changing the inf file,am i correct?
Sent from my iPhone -
I don't get why svl7's vbios mod is undervolted to where it was crashing on stock.
Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk -
I still keep the slv7 stock vbios and it doesn't crash, i think just once while i overclock without have modded the voltage.
-
Yes
-
With the svl7 vbios the heaven benchmark crashes in a few minutes for me.

Am I applying the inf correctly? disable DSE. download 352.86 from NVidia.com and extract to a certain location then download one of the .inf files from mega.co.nz. Copy the nvcvi.inf into the NVidia.display folder of the already extracted NVidia file and just install?
-
Are you using optimus or dedicated mode?
Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk -
im trying that method in optimus now. I tried dedicated and something weird happened. The lcd worked but the backlight basically stopped working. So I had to with a flashlight navigate to safe mode and use ddu.
The gtx 980m seems to work in my alienware 17 even though its from a msi gt72. is this a clevo card since its running in an alienware or a msi card? how does one find out? heres a screen shot from gpu z. Mr Fox's 345.20 mods seems to work but there is a throttling issue. Id like to upgrade the driver and see maybe if that would resolve the throttling. throttling at 51c doesnt make sense to me. would a change in vbios help? thank you

Heaven bench, you mean firestrike? slv7 stock, i got 8426 without crash. And i play long period without crash with gta5avands likes this.
-
in dedicated, it's kinda know about throttling. But no throttling in optimus.
I think there isn't differences between a clevo and msi vbios.. the only difference i know about its sometimes, msi gtx doesnt have a sli port...avands likes this. -
-
darcoder you are correct my gtx 980m doesn't have a sli connector. I thought that was very odd. ok so for your 352.86 upgrade I assume I download 352.86 from NVidia? correct me if I am wrong. also you have 2 files to download but they are both the same name what should I do with them? aren't they the same file? This is the part that is confusing me.
