i'll be installing SSDs cos the HDD is not good for gaming at 5400rpm...provided the weather here in Toronto eases and i can take a midday constitutional without having snow in my face! :p

my first SSDs were the corsair force 2 i think and it was good, and the ocz vertex 2 which was terrible and crashed a lot to where it killed the OS. this was around when i had the M11x R2 (the corsair force 2 was installed on that).

EDIT: still wondering if 500gb for a game drive is enough.

    Hi,
    I'm interested in the new Alienware 17 with 4th Gen i7-4700MQ ; 16GB ram; 500GB (8GB Hybrid, 5400 RPM) ; NVIDIA GeForce GTX 765M 2GB GDDR5.

I plan to add a 256GB ssd as the boot drive and keep the 500GB as the data drive.

If I order only 1 drive now, will there be a second hard drive bracket (caddy) to mount my upgrade drive in the future? Or will I have to order it separately?

it should come with an MSATA slot regardless of whether the original order asked for an MSATA SSD,

Thanks for the info. However, I need a full size SSD. So anybody here that got that model and that could check if there's an extra 2.5" drive cage in it?

it comes with 2 2.5" bays and a third if you remove the DVD/BD drive. I still think that getting an MSATA drive will give you more flexibility in what SSDs you can use.

Yes there is an Msata slot on the motherboard under the palmrest and past the 24 + odd screws. It sounds abit much to get at it and at first it will seem like it but it only takes me a few minutes to access it now so it's no big deal.

I wish I had an answer for the screw size the msata slot uses since I have so many screws from so many machines I have worked on over the years I just found one that fits. I know the answer of the screw size is out there somewhere though.

I think there might be a shortage or comparability issue with the 800 series and the 3d Screen. I would not be surprised if in 2 weeks or so it comes back.

From what Alienware said on their Facebook, thats exactly it. They'll re-release the 3D screen for the 780m in the next few days, and will release it for the 880m in a while once they have the compatibility issues resolved.

I'm about to order the stock model with fullhd display. My Samsung 840 250gb is waiting at home so 500gb hdd is enough for me.

The (very kind) dell rep offered me the display for free :)

I think that's a good price. The 860m is good enough for me. I mean it's as fast as the 770m. I'm wondering if the 17 is comming with a maxwell or kepler.

Well, there are TWO versions of the 860 from what I've read. One is Kepler, the other Maxwell... not sure which AW is using, gonna 'guess' Kepler.

Nice. I think you'll really like it. Did you get the 765M? I have an AW 17 with that and I am able to play a lot of games, but I have to lower some settings, mainly anti-aliasing. But at 1080p, you don't exactly need this. So, it's nothing to be worried about.

Remember to update your drivers and run some tests. Also, download some temperature monitoring programs to make sure everything is running properly.

The 880M is practically the 780M, but with more VRAM. If you have the 780M, I wouldn't even bother upgrading until the 900M series comes out. Only those enthusiasts who must break records in benchmarking, and have money to blow, should upgrade.

Be happy with the 780M. The 880M is really nothing but its fat twin brother. :D
