Hey guys I need your opinion. I used to own a M17xR3 which I loved, but eventually sold, and I am back on the market and am torn between the new and slimmer (but back to plastic) 2015 lineup and the aluminum AW 17 R1. Can anyone that has had the M17x R3 and the AW 17 R1 tell me how they compare size-wise? I did not have a problem with the size of the M17x R3 at all, but its hard to compare via pictures only. I'd like a firsthand account if possible.

    Thanks!

The R3 was the same dimension as the R4 correct? My 17R1 is slightly smaller then my R4 was but not by a whole lot. The styling is a LOT different so make sure your ok with that first. Also things to consider will be the new 2015's are not upgradable unlike the R1 was so you can't change much about them short of memory and HDD/SSD options and even those are watered down from what they were. 1/2 as much memory and less HDD space just off the top.

IMO your better off with the R1 with a 980m if you can do it cheap enough or look at a sager or other such machine.

I currently own both the M17x R4 and the 17 R1 so let me know if you want any side-by-side comparisons.

As for going with the 2015? I'd stick with what Mogrules said and stay away from the 2015 lineup, you can only change the hard drive and the ram, and even then it's limited to 16gb where as the R1 can go to 32gb and nearly every part is replaceable.

    Screw it and get a M17x R4 or M18x R2. I had the M17x R3, M17x R4, M18x R2, and the Alienware 17, and in order the rank would be: M18x R2 > M17x R4 > M17x R3 > Alienware 17 > anything in Dell's current lineup

    Hello,
I agree with everyone else.. I got the Alienware 17 r1 with the 120hz screen, upgraded to the 970m. It's awesome.. The 2015 models are great also, just not upgradeable.. Has the Graphics Amplifier hook up on the back though, if your into that..

i have the r3 with 120Hz and r5 with 60hz. I prefer in design r5 and my r5 seem to be less damaged in time than my old r3 who get easely scratch.
But instead, its true 120hz are beautyfull but i would prefer a matte 120Hz, brilliant screen are horrible watching a movie or playing in daylight, if you focus in a point on the screen, you will see your reflection... so till dell are not making a matte 120Hz like clevo, i prefer keeping a 60Hz matte...but it's mine opinion.
