    ****CORRECTION***
    I have an R2 NOT R3
    ****

I'm interested in upgrading the hard drive capacity on my laptop. I currently have one 128gb SSD and one 1 TB 2.5"

What is the largest SSD that will fit? What is the largest 2.5" drive that will fit?

I read somewhere that some of the 2.5" drives are too fat to be mounted in the computer so I am hesitant to buy without asking others who have done it before me.

I corrected my post. I have an R2 not R3.

Does the R2 need a "normal form factor drive?"

Are there any specific models I should look at for the hdd?

I assume any capacity ssd will fit?

Part of what I am trying to understand (and have been unable to find clearly stated online). Is what is the max thickness that a hdd can be for the alienware 17 R2?

These two drives are for sale on amazon, both seem to have the correct length and width but the height is almost doubled in the 4TB version. Will this fit?

no, 2tb is max for a 9.5mm that your laptop takes, not sure how much is that in inches

Ok cool. Any particular model/brand of 9.5 mm drive I should look into buying?

Also, what is a good model/brand of SSD that I should look into? I'm after a 1 TB SSD.

    Seagate/Samsung hdds are best imo.

For ssd, you cant go wrong with Sandisk/Samsung or Crucial.

Are there any 2 TB HDD that are faster than 5400 rpm? I don't see any 7200 ones?

No. I looked for 2 years and I never came across any "larger than" 1TB 2.5 inch HDDs that were also 7200 rpm. It seems like 1TB 7200rpm is it. Beyond that the market is 2TB 5400rpm HDDs and 2-4TB SSDs from "budget" lines.

nope, no 7200rpm for over 1tb.
for storage i really dont mind rocking the 5400rpm drives as thats what it is, storage... 80 vs 100mb/s doesnt matter much :)

I suppose. Though it makes me wonder since I'll be "storing" all my video games on the 2TB drive and that may reduce performance if it is 5400 rpm.

Annoying that Alienware decided to use 9.5 mm drives instead of 15.

For the ssd, what type of drive do I need? Do I just search "M2 SSD" and get results that way? I think there are several m2 types of ssd, will all work or is there one specific type that I need to use?

And of course if you have a specific model number/part number that you know will work I'd love to know (for a 1 TB ssd).
