I'd look on taobao to see how much that ebay listing is marked up.

I can't check right now for some reason world.taobao.com is 502ing for me

When I quickly glanced earlier I saw loads of listings with the 1060 (two missing memory chips) for 2200RMB which is promising just based off that sub 600usd is well possible.

yeah its very close to desktop 1060 MXM pricing. If 1070 costs too much i might just settle for that.

I've never heard of taobao before. I'll take a look at that marketplace. Also, I will be ordering a 120HZ screen this week to prepare for a pascal upgrade. Does anyone know where I can find one? The site I usually order laptop screens off of is out of stock for this particular model, and after doing some searches on google for some displays, it is unclear whether the screens have a refresh rate of 120HZ or 60HZ because it is never specified. I did find one listing on ebay that specifies it as a 3D screen (so it definitely is a 120HZ screen). However, I don't want to wait a month to get it.

Edit: Holy CRAP! The MXM cards on taobao are a CRAPTON cheaper than the listings on ebay.

Nevermind about the screen, I finally found a D02 revision 3D screen on ebay after about an hour straight of searching.

Also just a heads up: sometimes used Zotac Zboxes show up on amazon for about $890. It happens about once a week.

Also another question, do I need the 240 watt PSU to run the GTX 1070? I did some calculations and came to the conclusion that my Alien wouldn't ever consume more than 154.5 watts of electricity running everything at max throttle, but realistically would only consume about 117-125 watts during heavy gaming. I may have missed something, so can someone verify if I can use my current 180 watt PSU? I used 90 watts as the TDP for the GTX 1070 MXM module.

90W ? 120-150W is more like it. Of course you need the 240W PSU for that card to function at proper performance level.

My msi 1070 appears to have a tdp around 120w. My system bounces off 230w consumption running basically any game. And that's without the internal monitor on. I'm using mine as a desktop essentially with an external monitor.

Ok thanks guys. A friend told me that the TDP of a 1070 was 90 watts, but I was kinda skeptical since the TDP of my desktop 1060 is 120 watts. Thanks for correcting me.

I just saw that a few minutes ago and posted the link to it on another thread. I'm betting that the Zotac Zbox Magnus EN1080 probably has a standard MXM form factor GTX 1080 MXM module in it, but I really don't want to pay $1800 just to get a graphics card.

I was able to backup my zotac 1070 mxm vBios but I had to use nvflash to do it since Gpu Z could not.

Do you want the zotac 1070 mxm vBios?

I wish i could help you there my friend, but I was trying different vbioses to troubleshoot my issues with optimus during the proof of concept phase of my upgrade project, not for performance and since I'm currently working on a permanent cooling system I'm in no position to test the card currently

do you have a photo of this zotac gtx1070? I'm writing a thread about gpu upgrades and a photo could help for understanding differences with gecube cards

Do any of you think it would be possible to do a GTX 1070 SLI in an AW 18 with two of the Zotax 1070s? I was thinking of getting one to leave at home, and then take my AW 17 with me wherever I go. I'll be content with just upgrading my AW 17 though if that's all I can do :p

fantastic to know that you could have that card working perefectly, I have a question brows. Is it posible to reflash the BIOS of alienware 17 r5 as yours without a battery connected? because my gpu has stoped working and a solution was to reflash the BIOS but my battery is dead, do you think is it safe to force it to flash?

So I'm finalizing ordering all the parts for this upgrade. The screen was dropped off at my front door this morning, and I've ordered the cable, which will take about a month to arrive, and I'm about to order the Zotac mini PC. Do I need a higher grade heatsink to cool the card? I have the 75 Watt heatsink that came with my Alien, but I was thinking I could just adjust the GPU fan speed to accomodate. Is this a good idea or is this not adequate to cool a GTX 1070 enough?

the card puts out 120W by default so if there is a higher end heatsink option I'm inclined to go that route but I'm interested in what @Striker1234 has to say

Forget about this 75w heatsink. You must go for the more powerful 100w intended for 780/880m

MaxQ is almost certainly intended for BGA applications and at 90w i wouldn't be surprised if it was under the 1070n

Yeah, The main reason for pushing out this new piece of crippled Qrap is thin and flimsy. BGA all the way!! Pretty nice with 1080 and 90w  But you can brag you have the "fastest" graphics chips for " laptops JokeBook's" :bigconfused: The performance will come second or last!! @hmscott

Absolutely not. I actually had to mod the 100w heatsink as my first 1070 died due to the 100w not being enough cooling for it.

I found a 5 heatpipe 150 watt heatsink, so that should be enough since the TDP of the 1070 MXM module is 120 watts right?

It works well but takes upwards of a month to get it if you get it at all. It comes from china. The 1070 from the zotac can be cooled well by a regular 100w heatsink. Temps get around 75c max.

I want to try your modified inf. In my testing HP inf neuters the gpu on battery even on my stock system(I have 2) basically my plan is to replace your laptop model # and keep everything thing else and add optimus to the section you use as long as you're getting good performance on battery

    Hello!

The best option right now, is to use the 75W Heatsink, and add a third heatpipe (From a 100W heatsink is perfect), this requieres some dremel work but is the best option, since the 100W Heatsink needs more modding.

The prices for the Zotac Zbox Magnus EN1070 have risen through the roof. A few weeks ago, I was about to buy a used one for $898 but someone bought it before I did. Does anyone know any place I could acquire one for $900 or less?

By the way, the 120HZ screen looks amazing! I just got that + the eDP cable 5 days ago and I'm loving it!

Just a side note, I don't know if anyone on this forum has seen this yet, but there is a seller on ebay selling used 1070 mxm modules for around $555. This isn't the standard form factor card however and I really don't want to dremmel my Alien's chassis.

Weird, it's not like upgrading to a 1080 from a 1070 is a huge improvement, so i oind of wonder where all the used 1070s came from great price though
