I just received a new 17 as a replacement for my old and very sick r3, and thought it would be a good idea to move over my aftermarket 2x8GB ram sticks, but the laptop refused to post (4 beeps) with them inserted. Would I have to manually set the ram speed to 1333 to have it work? (The ram was working 15 minutes prior, so I don't think that's the issue)

Try it with one stick inserted.
    Does it post?

I'll have to try that - it might just be a bad RAM slot, or one of the cards might have died over the intervening 15 minutes I guess.

I've been meaning to, I just haven't had the chance yet - it looks like my GPU (or GPU driver) has a serious issue with playing Tomb Raider, so I'm focusing on that first.

You need to use DDR3L on the new platforms, they can't be mixed.

No chance of a BIOS update offering the ability to run DDR3L as DDR3? As far as I understand the only difference is the minimum voltage they require to run...
