Alienware 17 Ranger & the RX 480M

Hi, I've been helping a mate who purchased an RX 480M 4GB to upgrade his M290X 17 Ranger LVDS 60hz, however from what I've read, the RX 480M has only been documented working in the M18x R2 & M17x R4.

I've tested the card in my M18x R2 & successfully got it running but not the 17 Ranger, it's never detected in BIOS.

As it works on the 3rd gen systems I don't see why it shouldn't work in the 17 Ranger unless Dell has blocked something extra in the bios or just need the right vbios.

As of now, does anyone know of any success with the Rx 480M 4GB in the 17 Ranger? Thanks

 

The Rx 480M does not work in the M17x R4 nor the Ranger from what we know, are you sure those were not WX 7100 Radeon Pro cards?

 

Ah yes, my mistake, the M17x R4 thread I saw was a WX 7100.

I was able to get this RX 480 4GB to work in my M18x R2 successfully in SG mode.

This is the VBIOS it came with which gave code 43 error in device manager.


And this is one of the VBIOS you posted in a thread which made the card work for the M18x R2.

 

it will work in SG mode in 17x R4 or EDP mode with a 120hz screen and a WX7100 VBIOS.

 

Even if the card is 4GB and the WX7100 VBIOS is 8GB?
