I'm looking for a screen replacement with VERY good viewing angles. Colour, brightness and contrast aren't as important as viewing angles.

The default panel that came with my machine (B173HW02 V1) has poor viewing angles. There's always colour-shifting, no matter how I look at the screen (mostly noticeable with dark colours/backgrounds, and not nearly as bad on lighter colours).

Barring an IPS display (which doesn't seem to exist for this machine) anybody have compatible display suggestions?

    Must be matte.

Looks like the 17" IPS panel used in the new AW17 (as well as the Acer V Nitro, ASUS G751 and a few others) is now available for sale from a few outlets (including Eurocom).

This panel uses an eDP connector, and from what I know, the AW17 R1 has both an LVDS and a eDP port (the 120HZ 3D screen uses the eDP port).

In this case, am I correct in assuming the IPS panel will be compatible with the Ranger (assuming I manage to find/buy the correct cable)?

No not necessarily as Alienware hard codes all the part numbers into the machine so chances are the new IPS panel wouldn't be picked up and recognized by the machine. We have had this problem with the 120hz upgrades in that you have to have a particular model of screen and even down to certain revisions of that model or it just won't work.

Well that's a bummer. I've asked one of the AW reps on the forums to look into this.
