I now am an Alienware 17 owner! The screen however has a blue hue to it and also I find it too bright. I have played in the windows 7 screen calibration settings but am still not happy with how it looks. Does anyone have any advice on getting the screen to have a natural colour balance or would like to share their settings? Thanks for any help :)

Each panel will be different so short of buying a colorimeter you would have to tweak yours yourself.

True, but I'm sure with that you would be able to get it going the way you would like to.

He was saying he was having issues with that, still I would just keep trying to tweak it.

What screen model is your LCD? Not just resolution but actual manufacturer and model number.

Hi jsmits, I have the same problem - new alienware 17 with the 3D display option. The colour balance is definitely not right. The colours are very dull and the machine is basically useless for photo editing if you want to get correct colour balance. I have to plug in an external monitor to do any photo work if I want to play with white balance or colour enhancement as I can't trust the alienware monitor. I have tried to manually adjust the colour balance by comparing it to another monitor displaying the same test pattern, but could not do very well. It appears the LCD or backlight have some shortcomings. The alienware 17 display looks OK if you don't put it side by side to something else displaying the same image. I'm pretty disappointed with the display colour wise, but otherwise the machine is good. Interesting Dell market it as "Truelife"... Hmmm.

I'd be interested if you have found any more info on this subject!

Well for real photo editing you would need to calibrate the display using a colorimeter and then look at the delta-e.

Yes I understand that there are a number of possible procedures for accurate display calibration and verification, which I haven't done... yet! What I'm saying here is that the display appears to have washed out colours and/or poor dynamic range. Adjusting the gamma and/or separate RGB levels does not improve it. It simply causes level clipping. The problem appears similar to many white LEDs that appear very white and bright, but have very a peaky spectral profile and poor colour rendering. I'd love to hear from someone who actually has one of these Alienware laptops and has looked closely at the colour reproduction of the 120Hz or standard 17 inch LCD. It doesn't matter if you have used a spyder or manually adjusted it, the problem will be fairly obvious if you have another reasonable monitor to compare... or do i just have a dud? I have compared the Alienware display to a 5 year old Dell Studio XPS16 (which has a very nice display), and even a cheap LG monitor does better colour wise.

Hy guys. Just arrived my brand new AW17, and i've found the LCD too bright. I've tried to adjiust the contrast but not improve any more. My mom's Acer has better monitor, with better colours. I've also followed the guide above, but nothing. Any suggestions? Have you founded any solution? I've the basic LCD monitor with 1600x900 as resolution.

P.S.: I've noticed my screen was reconized as "Generic monitor plug and play"

The older 2013 had a TN LG panel which were not so good in luminance & viewing angles the new AU Optronics TN panel is better than the older TN panel and neither of them are IPS though the AUO panel manages, Still if u want to change the color reproduction have a look at ICC profile managing & the profile is here from Notebookcheck.net under display part of review you can compare the old 2013 model to this 2014 version of AW17.

I see this AUO panel is quite good not any particular bluish tinge or any issues. Used SAMOLEDs on my Android mobiles they suffer and generally need recalibration, Hope this helps.

Edit : If the display is really bad then call up the dell guys.
