I'm looking at purchasing an Alienware 17 so have been reading as many reviews as I can about it. One topic that has come up in several reviews is that although the screen is sharp colour reproduction is off to how it should be. For example, check out this review:

    Alienware 17: Full Review

I'd be interest to hear what owners on these forums think.

It's way too blue, this review also speaks of the issue and provides a color profile, unfortunately, it's in Hungarian.

Both contrast and luminosity are decent though, but I would have preferred an IPS screen (or better).

Note that color deviation is something the eyes get accustomed too, after a few hours, you won't notice anything...

Unless you use it to edit photos and suddenly compare the photo you printed with another one edited on a calibrated screen.

In my opinion, those reviews just needed something bad about the machine and decided to discredit the screen. I've had the M17x R4 and now the AW 17 and both of the screens look great. You should look beyond what reviewers are saying and go directly to the source on these forums - speak to a few owners in the "Owners Lounge" thread and decide from there.

Of course the screen isn't perfect, but it is a damn nice screen.

Nothing is accurate unless it is calibrated + profiled and used in a color managed software/environment with tagged material.

Windows and game are not for instance, so look good (contrast, proper gamma, enough gamut, viewing angle, white balance ) is what matters. Some people like warmer, some like cooler.

It all depends on how much you value color accuracy and angles of vision. Without a color profile, I wouldn't try to do any serious photo editing work with it. For gaming purposes, the screen is perfectly fine.

Thanks to everyone for their opinions so far :)

I did plan on using the laptop for video editing (amongst other things) which would involve adjusting the colour of some shots so maybe the Alienware is not right for me. Is it possible and easy to correct the colour to a less blue tone?

Almost any laptop screen is going to need to be calibrated to make things as accurate as they can be for photo editing and video editing. ;) Couple different programs out there to do the job though.

    Dell Alienware 17

This reviewer had good results after calibration. Better than any screen used in competing laptops. Maybe these laptops are calibrated improperly or not calibrated at all in the factories.

Well, if you're in the market for a computer to use for editing purposes, Alienware shouldn't be on the top of your list. These are, after all, designed for gaming. I wouldn't eliminate them either, I'm just saying...

Good point. Dell has the precision line for a reason after all. :)

I would use the laptop for mainly gaming and internet browsing with some video editing and word processing.

Has anybody adjusted the colour settings and is so are you pleased with the results or is the colour still not quite right?

I've got a custom calibrated profile installed on my r3 and it looks pretty awesome. Has alienware changed screen models at all? If not I wouldn't be worried as it looks alright at stock but if you the right profile it looks way better. Sane could be said for any laptop or desktop screen though.

I've calibrated an Alienware 17 120Hz display (new 2013 model) and it is definitely much better than the default calibration. See here: http://sdrv.ms/ItAXkC for a copy of the color management .icm file I used. Copy it into C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\color and then select it as default in Control Panel -> Color Management. Note that you may have to do a manual color calibration in windows 8 before you select the new file. When I tried it, it didn't matter which file I selected as default, it didn't make any difference until after I did the manual calibration. After that when I changed the default file it was immediately obvious.

Ill be interested to hear what you think of the color balance with this file...

    Cheers

It is not RGB LED, so of course it is not very accurate.

What is the model of the display is it the SEC5044? If so I have a calibrated profile that you can use. I'll attach it here once I get home.
